Recyle graves?

I am not too sure how I feel. Is space really that much of an issue?

Councils will be allowed to exhume bodies and re-use graves because of a shortage of cemetery space, ministers have said.

Officials will normally be able to re-use burial plots which are more than 100 years old after seeking permission from surviving relatives.

But there could be a case for exhuming corpses after just 75 years "where available space is particularly short", said the Ministry of Justice. And families who object to a relative's grave being re-used will be allowed to defer the exhumation for "at least" a generation, justice minister Harriet Harman said.

The preferred way of re-using graves would be a "double decker"-style approach which involves lifting existing remains, deepening the grave and laying a new coffin on top.

Ms Harman, who is standing as a candidate for the Labour deputy leadership, said: "It is a solution which can offer sustainable land use for the future and the prospects of keeping burial facilities in good order. It is an option which has received wide support."

However, the department said a "substantial minority" of people consulted were against the plans.

In the first consultation published last year, only 17 of the 55 members of the public who responded were in favour of re-using graves. Overall, one third of the 239 responses were against the idea in last year's exercise.

The department is currently drawing up guidelines for councils which wish to introduce re-use of graves.

Ms Harman said a new government survey had shown burial grounds in England and Wales will become full in about 30 years. Remaining space in some urban areas may be much less - for example, London cemeteries have just 12 years left.

Of the 500,000 deaths in the UK each year, about 350,000 are cremated and 150,000 are buried.

Interesting debate. I for one, am not a fan of cemetaries, and I would be fine with another coffin in my spot. Because really, who cares once you're dead? Your body is disintegrating, you're gone - why not?

I've always wondered when this would start becoming an issue.  The US alone has 280 million people that in roughly 80 years will all be dead.  Where the heck do you go with all those bodies?  They can't all have graves right?  At some point the earth would be nothing but cemetary.

I'm fine with no grave personally.  burn me up and sprinkle me across the ocean.  Or a garbage dump.  Doesn't much matter.  Hopefully I'll be in a much better place.

You know, I don't want to be buried and I think the way we bury people is unnatural. But at the same time, I'm not comfortable with this prospect of reusing graves. I get the impression that most people who want buried want their own space, and not bunking with someone else.

Well, when my mom died, my dad had to pay the cemetary quite a lot of money to have her buried.....there was the cost of the plot, the cost of the burial vault (which is required here in MI, they also make you buy one even if you're cremated and the cremains are to be buried), the cost to open and close the grave, the cost of the headstone, the cost to set the headstone, and this other fee the cemetary calls "perpetual care" which is a fee they charge to everyone to cut the grass in the cemetary.  After this exhorborant amount of money was paid out, I know I sure wouldn't want someone else occupying my mom's space!

I've told my family I want a private viewing beforehand, then I'm to be cremated and my cremains are to be scattered in a place I've already selected.....my family knows where I want to be.

stack 'em high and pile 'em deep!  or is it the other way around?

so, yes, whatever... i don't plan on taking up much space since i want to be cremated.  but i do want to be interred as is the rule...  dig a hole and throw me in...
