Drive In Theaters

Do you have Drive In Theaters nearby?  We have one about 20 miles northwest of us, it has 3 screens.  It's open Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights.  I haven't been in awhile but a co-worker just mentioned he's going this coming weekend, and it got me thinkin'.

We used to have a drive-in here that we went to about every Saturday night in high school. Years ago, someone bought it, tore the screen down and added on to the projector/consession building and converted it into a house and are living in it. There are now cows where the theater used to be.

The one near us, shows 2 movies per night, and they let ppl in extremely early. The good thing is you can bring in food, coolers etc. so it's a MUST you bring at least a 6 pack to make it thru both movies, because it tends to be a loooooong night. smile.gif

Ours always did double features too. It was nice because getting home late from a date, we could always say we just stayed for the second show.

They closed our last one a few years ago.

There's a few out in the country, but they're hours away.

I was watching the news the other night and there are a lot of people starting to show movies in their backyards for their neighbors.

If I owned my own house I would consider that. Put the projector in a window in the backyard and build a temporary 200" screen out back. That could be fun. Expecially for Packer games.

I saw Gremlins at the drive in. I don't remember what the other movie was that night.

The very last movie I ever saw at the Drive-in was the third Austin Powers movie.

I remember my Mom & Dad used to take me to them a lot when I was little.

Oh Darlene! I am glad I'm not the only one interested in Drive ins! Our last one was torn down when I was 5. I went to see the Toy with Richard Pryor.

If you don't mind I'm gonna dig up an old thread that had a link to Drive-ins still around in the US! clap.gif

Oh man!  Drive Ins!  I remember the days!  smile  The last one I went to was back in about 1990 and there was a double feature re-run..."Carrie" and "The Shining".  There are no drive ins left here anymore!  cry

Now I don't even have a cinema in Weipa!  LOL...every two months they roll in a big screen on the back of a flat bed truck and everyone gathers around outside sitting on blanekts and bring your own chairs and we watch a flick!  Never a new release though!  Only ever old classics...which i do not mind in the slightest! aww

We have a drive in just outside of town. It's packed every weekend, and they always do a double feature. I'm really hoping they show Grindhouse this summer, that would be a perfect drive in movie.

I saw my first movie at a drive in with my uncle. It was Jungle Book.

We also has a neighbor with a projector who hangs a white sheet from his window and shows movies every once in a while. (Same neighbor who has PigeonCam, but the pigeons are on the other side of the building.) He did that for Memorial Day, and we watched a documentary on summer jazz.

The drive-in theatres of the Milwaukee area have all died off and I sadly watched them dismantle the last two. That was such a great memory of my childhood, and I miss it. My parents would load us in the car with blankets and lawn chairs. They's make popcorn on the stove and butter and salt it in a big brown paper bag for us to take along. We'd stop at the A&W for rootbeer and cheeseburgers on the way. Then we'd watch something really cool, like Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger! (Hey, it is too cool when you're a little kid!) Of course, being the only kid with a sleeping problem, I'd also manage to watch Cheech & Chong second feature because they thought I was sleeping. {{lol}}

Oh man G-Gal. You just opened a door in my brain!

It's all flooding back.

I forgot about the A&W.

We'd go play mini-golf, then A&W drive in (which was right next to the course) and then go to the drive in.

Fun times smile.gif

You bet! Where did you mini golf, Johnson's Park? It's funny how these memories are so vivid to me. I remember loving the feel of my Baby Bear mug of rootbeer, because it was so cold and frosty from the mug being chilled. I remember liking to hear the crickets chirping before the movie started, and feeling hungry because I could smell the popcorn and hot dogs from the concession stand. I remember thinking those old silver radio boxes, the one you fasten to the window to listen to the movie, were so cool. I wish someone would bring a drive-in back to the area...we still have one drive-up A&W, so that would be like old times!

I think it was Johnson's park.

I know when they were talking about closing down that one on 27'th (drive in) I wished I had the means to buy it and run it.

There's still a few on the way from here to LaCrosse.  But they're a long way from here.

I grew up with A&W too. But I no longer have one too close to me. I think there is a small one a few cities over. We used to go to the one in Standish when we were up up to see his parents. cry It is the old style were you order your food using the phone at the table.

Oh and I liked Sinbad too right along with Clash Of The Titans! biggrin

Awesome! Yeah, Ray Harryhausen was a ground-breaker for special effects in his day. He did some amazing work that really brought imagination to life!

We had a drive-in theater one town over, and used to go there quite a bit. What great times! I saw "Grease" there (Probably my 10th time or something) "The Fox & The Hound", "Corvette Summer", lots of 70's Disney movies, and of course, "Hard To Hold." It was POURING that night, but my mom took us anyway. We parked the car sideways & watched out the side windows. There was only one other car there that night, but they continued to run the movie. We needed our Rick Springfield fix, and the movie hadn't come to any of the regular theaters.

Oh, and "Clash of the Titans" - one of my all-time favorite movies. Seriously, I can quote along with it, I've seen it so many times.
