Live365 still planning for the future

That's a good sign right?

They've announced a test program called Live365 Mobile in which they are testing their stream over wireless phones and in auto's (using adapters).

I'm just reading up on it now, but it's good to know they're looking into the future like this.  The test right now is only for people who have T-Mobile I believe, but the phones are capable of tuning in all Live365 stations.

Oops, clearly that's Cingular Wireless.  I must have been thinking of the program name (Live365 Mobile).

I know!  It would be great!

The only thing is, until wireless phone's allow unlimited internet streaming I can't imagine it catching on too much.

I mean, if you're using your phone minutes to listen, that could get expensive.

But with adapters, you can listen through your car stereo, through headphones, or even your home stereo.

It would be okay on the weekends when most people have unlimited free minutes.

This is from the website where the company is talking about how it works...

Works with Wi-Fi but don't wait - use your unlimited mobile data plan NOW!

Just a note - this isn't a "wait for wi-fi to be everywhere" product... this works today with your $25-$50/month unlimited data plans through the regular cellular network anywhere there is broadband coverage - which is a lot of metropolitan areas throughout the US.

I've driven around, streaming Live365 continuously through Oakland, San Francisco, San Mateo, Pleasanton, San Jose, Hayward, even driving from San Francisco all the way out to Modesto and even at the horse ranches in Lodi, it works great! I've also tested it driving around Los Angeles and Hollywood with only a few short dropouts and Radio365-Mobile reconnects within seconds automatically. And, unlike satellite radio, it stays connected when you drive under bridges, into underground car parks, on the bus, and all the way into your office, at your desk. No sweat.

I have an unlimited data plan on my phone with Alltel. Yes it is expensive ($60.00/mo) but I can use it two ways. I can access the internet and email directly from the smartphone, or I can connect my laptop to the web through it and use it that way too.

I tried streaming FFR directly through the phone but couldn't get that to work. I can stream it though the laptop/phone connection though. I don't know if they would ever enforce it, but the terms of service for my data plan specifically says they can shut me off for streaming media so I don't do it. I had to try it once while driving down the road just to see if it worked. smile.gif

I'm sure it won't use up your minutes . . . they will have an extra plan to get more $$ out of you for the music access. Giving you an additional feature without charging you extra? Its just not the cellular way.

Web, they were just talking about the service plans.

Verizon specifically says no, but there are others that are fine with it.  I think Sprint was one.  It sounds like Live365 is pressuring the phone companies a little to help push this technology through.

Afterall, an unlimited data plan isn't unlimited if it has limits now is it? confused

Oh, and the whole thing with this is that they have software you put on your phone so you can tune in the network (Web mentioned it didn't work on his phone.  Without the free software it won't work).

After more reading it sounds like it's any internet capable phone, or atleast the smart phone.

The impression I get is that if you're able to access the internet on your phone you would be able to use this software.

No, they don't break em' down individually. They just say if you have an unlimited data plan you'd be a good candidate for it.

But Web says Alltel says in their agreement that there are limits to their unlimited plan hmm.gif

Verizon and Alltel are on the same kind of cell system. That is probably why they both have the "no streaming" deal.

Unlimited? Yes, that's exactly right, it should really mean "unlimited" but it doesn't and they can get away with it. Even Alltel's "unlimited" text messaging plan. If you read the fine print, "unlimited" means up to 5,000/month.

Its just misleading marketing. It is the same thing in the web hosting market. Many hosts offer "unlimited" everything. First of all, its impossible because your data has to be stored somewhere and I have yet to see an Unlimited Gigibyte hard drive for sale. Just start trying to use some of that "unlimited" service on pretty much anything and see how far you get before they shut you down.

The really fast wireless data access is only available in what my cellular rep calls the "NFL Markets" . . . only the biggest of cities. The data plan out here in rural America runs at about 140k. I think that is really pretty good for what it is. It's about 3x dialup speed. I'm just happy to have remote web access. I used to only be able to connect over my cellphone to a separate dialup plan that ran at a top speed of 14k and used my cell minutes. That sucked.

Cingular may be able to do it because they are much more marketed in the larger cities with the faster networks. I don't expect to see that kind of speed out here any time soon.

I've had Sirius for over a year and half.....it's great....even have it at home thru Dish Network (at least the music channels)  When I travel, it's great that I don't have to change the stations every hour or so as I hit a new town.....plus the music choices are 65 channels strong!  biggrin

Yay! The search worked.

Jr and I argued for an hour last night with him claiming that the iPhone was the "first smartphone". Then he changed his stance to the "first true smartphone". He says no other phone was a "true smartphone" before the iPhone.

I'm bumping JR's own thread to show him his own posting of photos of a phone running a Live365 app before the iPhone was released.

The photos of this phone he posted would:
Phone
Email
Text
Browse the internet
Calendar
Multitask apps
Create and edit Office documents
Create, and navigate files with a PC like file manager
Copy & Paste
etc.
etc.

That's not a "true smartphone"?

Web has you there, JR... smart phones have been around for a while. iPhone is just a little smarter than some of the previous versions, but that is mostly because people write so many apps for them.

Ok, Ok. The debate was on what a SMARTPHONE is today.

I contend that the "true" smartphone didn't emerge until the iPhone, which brought most, not some, but most of the functions of your home computer into your pocket.

iPhone created the APP store, which allowed your phone to essentially download and run programs, which is a huge step. The addition of things like touch screens and such was also from Apple as far as hand sets are concerned (previously i believe the only touch screens used styluses, not hand gestures).

The point I was making was that while phones were clearly getting smarter before the iPhone, I don't believe that we had a TRUE smartphone UNTIL the iPhone. As I pointed out to Web, surely business professionals would have thought the Blackberry was a smart phone, and it was for it's time. But there was a reason that it only got used by professionals for the most part. It wasn't THAT easy to use and understand.

I contend that to be the TRUE smart phone almost anyone should be able to pick it up and start using it. When iPhone came along it essentially did that. It was true WYSIWYG, you could use your fingers to do almost anything you could do at home on your computer.

Watch a movie, read a book, download and run a program, play a video game, run a spread sheet, edit photo's, etc.

YES, as web will point out there were phones before this that did SOME of those things, but the iPhone revolutionized what a smart phone TRULY is and now everyone has worked to catch up to the iPhone.

But looking back on phone history, I think if you honestly try to assess when the smart phone TRULY because a SMART phone, it started with the iphone. The ones before that were certainly smarter than their predecessors, but they weren't as smart as we thought they were!

I can't believe Webster had to dig through the archives AGAIN to pull up a post from four years ago to throw at me. Time for a hobby Scooter! Maybe you could use your time sharpening your declining online pool playing skills! nana.gif

It sounds like a debate on what a "smart phone" is.

Or just an Apple fanboy that doesn't want to let go.

I contend that Apple revolutionized the marketing of a smartphone. They also did the typical Apple thing, and made it easier to use and more accessible to the general public. I think that's the part that's unique about it, not that it's any smarter than any other smartphone.

Now that I've had the chance to play with a Blackberry and an iPhone, I think my perfect phone would be an iPhone with the Blackberry Bold keyboard and track ball.

laughing.gif I had to ask Pambo what the name of the dinosaur she just recently offloaded was. It was the PPC-6600 by Palm. As memory serves me, that was one of the first ever smart phones.

I see your point, JR... but from the industry perspective the iPhones are just really cool smart phones that do a lot more stuff.

Or, a bit of both.

What is the definition of a "smartphone" ??

In the end, you can not nail down a subjective, always moving definition. But it sometimes works to fit an agenda.

Silly? Yes.

Something stoopid to argue over? Yes.

But it's still fun to get iPhone fans all worked up once in a while by pointing out that the iPhone may not being the best at, or in this case, the first of everything.
