RIP Mr. Wizard

I loved Mr. Wizard's World!!!

It is with deep sadness that we regret to announce the passing of Don Herbert - the one and only "Mr. Wizard". Don lost his battle with cancer today, June 12, 2007, at 9 AM Pacific Daylight Time - slightly more than one month shy of his 90th birthday. He was lovingly surrounded by his family, who are at once, saddened by his passing, and relieved that he is no longer suffering.

We all feel extremely lucky to have had him in our lives and to have known and worked with Don over the years. We have also been tremendously honored to carry on his legacy as an original and truly legendary figure in the worlds of both Television and Science Education. He has been inspirational and influential in so many ways and on so many lives and we are comforted in the fact that his ground breaking work and legacy will continue to inspire many more people for years to come.

Thank you so much to all of you for your support and sympathy.

Sincerely, The Family

I used to watch him. I thought he was so cool when he did his science experiments.

Wow, I'm surprised at the number of people who don't know Mr. Wizard!

Mr. Wizard's WorldMr. Wizards World (1983-1991)

Don Mr Wizard Herbert brought science into all of our homes with his Nickelodeon show Mr. Wizards World. The show aired from 1983 - 1991 and reruns were shown until 2000. This makes Mr. Wizards World the longest running show in Nickelodeons history.

On all his shows, Mr. Wizard sought to make science accessible for everyone, and show kids how to perform scientific tricks with everyday materials, and to encourage them to ask questions about the world around them. Many people have credited Mr. Wizard with their career choices in science or computers.

Mr. WizardI loved Mr. Wizards World dearly, and of all of the Nickelodeon shows I watched over the years, I would have to say that this one brings back the most memories. As a kid, I was fascinated with science. In fact, I still am. I did everything I could to make sure that I never missed an episode.

Mr. Wizards approach to teaching science made you feel like you could do anything. Experiment after experiment, he never talked down to kids or belittled their intelligence in any way. With Mr. Wizard at your side, you knew that anything from mastering electricity, to creating an erupting volcano was easily within your grasp. Mr. Wizards World inspired millions and generally holds a special place in the memories of most people that watched the show.

Later, newer shows would strive to bring science to kids. Beakmans World and Bill Nye the Science Guy were some of the more popular ones that thrilled kids with the magic of science. But, in my opinion, none of them ever came close to matching the charm of Mr. Wizards World. Mr Wizards World episodes are available on DVD now through Mr. Wizard Studios.

I remember watching Mr. Wizard in the mornings before going to work even after we were married. It was either watch Mr Wizard, or the hog markets. I remember always thinking "He really acts like he doesn't enjoy working with kids much".
