Aaargh!!! Someone give me some tips!

I need help here!  They made me go tell an indigenous woman that she had such bad body odour that she had to leave the pub last night!  blehblehbleh  Boy did that go over well!  NOT!!!

Oh man she stunk!  She ponged the whole place out and I swear the stench clung to everything!  She managed to single handedly clear the whole pub out!  And she claimed it wasn't her!  She said she showered 2 days before!!! Yeah right...more like a week!

I have never ever smelt such bad B.O. until I came up here!  The indigenous do not believe in deodorant!  Arghhh!!!

Now can someone please give me some tips in diplomatically telling these people that they smell vile!  It's a sensitive issue when dealing with indigenous people!  I think I handled it ok but has anyone ever had to tell someone that they stink?  And how did you handle it?

How to Tell Someone They Smell Bad at Work

If someone you know seems to suffer from a "failure to bathe", you don't have to suffer in silence. There's no great way to address the issue, but there are good ones.

Steps   [edit]

  1. Get the best attitude - an empathic, informative attitude.
  2. Find a quiet place to initiate the discussion.
  3. Use neutral, impersonal language that refers to professionalism and the impact on the office.
  4. Say something like, "I have noticed the smell of (the offensive odor), and Im concerned that it is having an impact on your ability to interact with your co-workers and our customers."
  5. Let them know you are pointing it out to be helpful. Use the Power Phrase, "Im telling you because its important for you to know."
  6. Set up a follow-up discussion.
  7. Let them know how they're doing.

Alternate Method  [edit]

  1. Buy two very nice scented soap/shower gel/perfume/deoderant and bring them to work
  2. Show one to your offender. Explain how much you love it.
  3. Let them keep the one you showed them. You can have the other.
  4. If this doesn't work, ask them how they liked their product. If they look sweaty or nervous, suggest a new way of how to use it. Repeat again the next time you see them.

Tips   [edit]

  • Tell the offender, not anyone else.
  • Be as low key as you can, but don't hide the truth in hints.
  • If they become reactive, be empathic about it.

Warnings   [edit]

  • Dont refer to culture or race or anything that could get you in legal hot water.
  • Dont assume you know what the underlying issue is. You dont.

Hey thanks Ruby! smile

I think I'm gonna get a whole pile of deodorant and soap samples and gift wrap them and put them in a Lucky Dip box!  LOL...everyone loves something for free!  Especially these people!  I wonder how they'll take getting deodorant as a lucky dip prize though!  biggrin

I'd just hang a sign-

"If you stink, don't come in for a drink".smile
