Best....Concert....Ever!!

Simply put, What was the best concert you ever attended? What made it so much better than others? Discuss

For me...I've not been to many, more when I was young & Mom & Dad took us along, so it's a kinda lame list but it's a toss up between John Mellencamp (done at IU's Assembly Hall for Homecoming...AWESOME!!!) and Weird Al, with a slight edge to Al cuz of the massive amounts of costume changes, huge repertoire, Concert Only songs, comedy throughout, and Multimedia galore.

well, as previously discussed, for me it would be the Meat Loaf concerts I've attended to.  The others didn't even come close.

I did get to see Huey Lewis & the News back in 2001 at the Star Theatre in Indiana.  It was a perfect setting for a smaller scale show like his and that was a really fun concert.  I had seen him at the height of his popularity back in the 80's, but had crappy seats so I couldn't see anything.  That's never any fun.

You missed a good one!  Very nice show.  It was my first time at the Star Theatre & I really thought it was a great venue.

C'mon all you annono-peeps, NO ONE has been to a great concert???? Just Jeremy & I? Wow, I can't believe that, especially with as much money is pulled into concerts now a-days, and how fast they sell out...lets hear from you

Shania a few years ago, right after Come On Over came out.  GREAT SHOW.  She was incredibly energetic and really got the crowd into it.  I originally went with a friend because she liked her, but after the concert I think I was hooked and bought all her discs

The best concert I ever went to was Duran Duran in Stuttgart Germany in '87.  It was fantastic.  We got to see them drive up and I took rolls and rolls of film.  It was electric (no boogie woogie).    I have an off sense of humor.  Anyway, I've been to lots of concerts, but that was the best.  Skid Row/Bon Jovi in Little Rock, AR, was great, too.

Welcome to the boards Trish!  Are you by chance our St. Louis Cardinals fan?  If so, I'm sorry

But hey!  All they gotta do is give the Sox the same treatment they gave the Yankees!

I would have loved to have seen Duran Duran back in 87, that was right near the end of their massive run of big hits, it would have been a hit-filled show!

Yes, I'm the St. Louis Cardinals fan.  Oh, how the mighty have fallen.  What a credit to the American League the Bo sox are.  I'm glad for them.  They deserve it, especially after watching the World Series.  I'm glad to see anyone that isn't the Yankees win.  My favorite sport is hockey.  I'm a St. Louis Blues fan most of all, but it doesn't look like I'll get to see them this year.  Too bad, really.  Hockey is such a great sport.

Duran Duran was an awesome concert.  They have an energy that is out of this world.  I'm just waiting for them to come back to St. Louis so I can see them again.  I'm so glad that the original 5 are back together.  I request 1985 by Bowling for Soup so often because I can identify.  Those were awesome times.

Right!

As soon as I heard the original five were all back together for the new album I was REALLY excited about it's release.

I'm deeply rooted in the eighties too, so that Bowling For Soup song really struck a chord for me as well.  I know every generation thinks theirs was the best, but I really do think the 80's was the last generation with any hint of innocence to it.

By the 90's rap music came along and all bets were off in regards to what the new low we could reach was.

I mean, my parents were told by their parents that music was devil music because Elvis swiveled his hips, the eighties the biggest controversies were over things like Madonna singing about keeping her baby in Papa Don't Preach, but NOW.  Yikes!  What else can they POSSIBLY to be more vulgar, more shocking?  And the thing is, back in the 80's you had your acts that would push the envelope, but they were UNDERGROUND (Free plug for you J.D.), now the worst stuff is MAINSTREAM.

I compare a 1984 Hot 100 Chart to todays and it's night an day.  In 1984 everything was fun, mostly light-hearted, good music.  Today charts, you LITERALLY wouldn't want your kid listening to about 70% of the songs in their unedited versions.

Aaaaaaaaaaaah, yes, if there is a heaven, it will eternally take place in the years of 1983-1987, just one neverending loop in time

I saw the Pixies Reunion tour this past week and it was phenomenal. No, not the best concert ever, but certainly one of the best of the year. & Yes I know it it probably only the Underground 80's fans (which airs Sunday nights on Freeze Frame Radio 7-8 pm CST and is rebroadcast Fridays 10-11 pm CST) who would even know who the Pixies are!

Wow that plug for my show was almost painless, no? :D Riggs?

Mo started this topic awhile back- thought it might be a fun one to revisit! While I know a lot of you may say Barry Manilow, what was another great concert that you were at that you will always remember?

I know my last entry was the Rolling Stones '89 Steel Wheels tour, but I saw them again in '99 at the Bradley Center here in Milwaukee. I was 10 rows back and 10 rows up to the right of the stage. (Back when $125 for a concert ticket was cause for riot. It was worth it, I would have paid $300 for that night!). That was as close as I had ever been to such a big act. I was so close that legend has it that I was able to tell Keith Richards "Welcome back! The Stones Rule!" and he said "thnk yu I in La Rollin Stonez uhhhh...."

Although I've said Barry is indeed an outstanding show,  2 shows come to mind.    1st was the Fleetwood Mac tour last summer at the All-State Arena near Chicago.  On a stroke of pure luck, I came into 2 tickets on the right side of the stage 4 rows back. They were right there in front of me, rock legends.  I was floored the entire time.  The smile did not leave my face at all, and they sounded as great as they ever have.  I'm a huge fan, and took my best friend along, who was familiar with their songs, but didn't know them much.   She was blown away by it.

The other concert was Bon Jovi at Alpine Valley last summer.  As always, the boys were simply perfect.   I'd been to previous Bon Jovi concerts at the Bradley Center and Summerfest in Milwaukee, but nothing compared to Alpine.  The atmosphere, the sound, everything was perfect.

I loved the Bon Jovi New Jersey tour.  That was really good.  Their opening band was Skid Row.  I still have a cigarette that Alec John Such had clamped between his teeth.  I saw Tico Torres after the show.  He was a total jerk.  We were waiting for a friend who was backstage and he came out.  He asked why we were there and we told him and he said "We don't want any jailbait.".  I was furious!  I was 18 and was VERY insulted.  Who at 18 wants to be called jailbait?  I wanted to tell him that he didn't have to worry, I wouldn't sleep with him anyway, but I have more class than that.  Anyway, love the music, don't like Tico.

The best concert I've been to would be Journey, back with Steve Perry of course. I also saw them last summer. It just wasn't the same. On my other side (the more wild side) I would have to say Guns and Roses then Poison, Motley Crue, Great White, Warrant, Firehouse, etc.

Hey Sparky, last summer Journey was WITHOUT Perry right?

I had heard he wanted to tour but needed time to recouperate and the band refused to wait because they felt they had momentum from a somewhat successful CD a few years ago.

I would love to see them if they were all back together again, but without Perry I don't think I'd go if I had free tickets.  To me the lead vocalist IS the band in most cases (although I heard his replacement sounds just like him).

Hey folks-

I know most of the posters here like pop/rock/80s music- but do yourself a favor. Remember this name. KARL DENSON. He is some of the best pop/jazz you will ever hear. He used to be Lenny Kravitz's saxaphone player (maybe still is?) but he has his own band- Tiny Universe. This is quite possibly the best club sized show you will ever see. I've seen him twice, the 1rst time with a friend who wouldn't think he'd like it- We were both floored at what a party that show was, and went back later in the year when he returned, and that show was even better!

I've never been to a dead concert, but I have heard the stories.  It's like one big family and they welcome everyone.  Can't find anything wrong with that.

It's kinda like the boards here.  Great music and people that treat you like family (but without that one member of the family that we all have that everyone tries to avoid but never seems to be able to).  Anonymous, why don't you sign up so that we can identify you as a member of the family.  We're all fun and it's not like those chat room boards on yahoo where someone is always insulting someone and the intelligence level is zero.  We're an accepting bunch and respect each other.  I, personally, would love to see you as a registered member of the board.

I've not been to many concerts, but of those I have, I think the best I've ever been to was a double-bill Bon Jovi/.38 Special. It was back in about '87 or so in Omaha. I've been a .38 Special fan since high school so any .38 is good .38 to me.

As The Jazz Doctor, I do love the Jazz. And before I loved the Jazz, I dug Underground 80's artists (see Trish for broadcast times of these shows). But before I loved these, there was only the classic rock to love in the world of JD.

I still love the Stones, Who, Yes, but not far down this list is the .38 Special, Dovetails. BY GOD- 3 guitars?!?! 2 drummers?!?! "What If I'd Been The One" "Back Where You Belong", heck even the later "A Heart Needs a Second Chance"....good good stuff, I agree!

My name is JD, and I approve this message.

On a whim, a couple years ago for Christmas, I got my wife an electric guitar and she got me a bass. After two years of plinking around we still stink . . . but we have fun for a couple old peole that are getting close to celebrating the 1st anniversary of their 39th birthdays.

One of our friends keeps telling my wife "When you can play .38 Special's DeJa Voodo for me . . . then I'll be impressed". hehehe

Last year about this time, on a whim, I bought an electric guitar FROM WALMART! LOL! There was a clearance sale on this beginner guitar & speaker combo. I used to play years ago, did ok, but never learned how to solo. Sold all my old equipment. So this new Walmart guitar was to be my next new hobby..& as I moved the dusty thing this evening, I was reminded that I should re-start that hobby....one of these years....

We bought a couple software programs called "Bass Method" and "Guitar Method" to learn from. They are no replacement for real lessons, but they are quite good. I was practicing pretty regular until this summer. I got sick in July and after four hospital stays and two surgeries over the next five months, I got out of the habit. I need to get back at it again . . . it sure would have been a lot easier 25 years ago!
