Saffron
Saffron is the stigma of the fall flowering crocus. Peek inside most any flower, and you will see three threadlike filaments. These are stigma - but only in the saffron crocus are these stigma worth thousands of dollars per pound. Saffron is so valuable because it is a very labor intensive crop, and only 5-7 pounds of saffron can be produced from each acre of land. This makes saffron the most expensive spice by weight - it always has been - but by use saffron isn't that expensive, because a little goes a long way. A single gram of saffron easily translates into golden color and fragrant flavor in 10 recipes of saffron rice for four, several batches of bread, or a couple of big pots of paella.

This here chunk of rock that we are riding around the sun on travels at about 18.55 miles per second ... which is 1,113 miles per minute ... which is 66,780 miles per hour.

I wouldn't recommend sticking your head out the window at that speed.

Question: How many pounds of food will one person eat in a lifetime?

A newsletter from the Wolfe Clinic sets a person's total intake at 60,000 to 100,000 pounds...

That's the equivalent weight of six to 10 elephants. If a person lives for 70 years and eats 60,000 pounds of food, that works out to 2.35 pounds per day.

supposedly the longest word in a dictionary, an artificial word said to mean a lung disease caused by the inhalation of silica dust

It's also the coldest of all the Great Lakes.  If you drown in this lake, your body will never float to the surface.

cnn.com has an article on the water level of lake superior this year being low, and scientists are scratching their head. doesn't sound low to me?confused

Some people here in MI think they're siphoning off water and sending it out west.  I know they talked about doing this a couple of years ago and were told they couldn't because of an agreement between Canada and us.

Truthfully, I think that may be what's happening and it's been kept hush-hush.  The water level really is much lower than it normally should be.
