Bottled Water?

I found this blurb in an article on MSNBC/Newsweek interesting...

On Friday, NEWSWEEK has learned, The New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle will each carry a full-page ad containing a message from the International Bottled Water Association. This weeks campaign will be the first industrywide advertising since 1999. In the ads, the industry pushes the notion that calorie-free, refreshing water is a healthy choice in a country where diabetes, obesity and heart disease afflict so many people. But beyond touting those healthy virtues, the ad also seeks to subtly reframe the debate. Whether it comes from a faucet or a bottle, drinking water is an easy step people can take to lead a healthier lifestyle, the ad says.

Much of this message is not new: the industry has spent years promoting the notion that Americans are better off drinking bottled water than soda or beer, and from a health standpoint, its hard to argue with them. But lately more peoplelike the U.S. mayorsare comparing bottled water not to Coke or Budweiser, but instead to the free, clean stuff flowing out of taps. Since bottled water requires petroleum to create its containers, is often trucked across the country to supermarkets, and leaves millions of plastic shells behind in landfills after its guzzled, thats a comparison thats necessarily less flattering.

What is your take on bottled water...a frivolous convenience, a healthy and necessary product, or perhaps something else?

I think its convenient, but moreso than bottled water, I prefer water I know has gone through a filtration process. I lived through the Great Milwaukee Crypto Outbreak of 1993. Very rarely will have water straight from the tap if I can avoid it. I  imagine restaurants would be the only place.

My mom has well water that has a slightly sulfur smell, so ever since I had that water, I prefer bottled water. And I do like the convenience, and we recycle our plastic bottles.

But sometimes I get this funny taste in my mouth (I think it's from seasonal allergies) so that I don't like the "taste" of water.  So recently, I've been addicted to mint water, it's got just a hint of mint so it's like you just brushed your teeth.  I love it!

I am weird when it comes to water. Growing up drinking water in a glass always smelled and made me think my dog's hair was in it! bleh
I don't know what my deal is but it has taken me quite awhile to be able to drink more water than pop. I prefer bottles. I drink Propel more than just regular plain water. Oh and I don't like Aquafina.

Like I said, I am weird.hmm

For me, it is mainly the convenience of the container when out mobile.

At home, I just drink tap water.

I like the purity of bottled spring water, and it is healthier. I like the convenience just as much. I do have to admit that tap water is scary since Milwaukee's  water treatment was revealed as so poor when the crypto outbreak happened, so I've leaned towards bottled since then.

Since my husband works for our city's water department, I know how clean our tap water is and I have no qualms about drinking it because we've got the cleanest water in the state of MI.

At our cottage, we have well water and I have one of those purifiers on the tap only because I can taste the iron from the well pipe.  We have our water tested every other year just for peace of mind.

About the only time I buy bottled water is when I'm travelling.......I hate to say it, but some of you guys have some nasty water in your taps.  bleh

The tap water was the best water I've ever had anywhere....from this picture you can see why!

I actually have the five gallon water bottles delivered, but I have to drink my water ICE COLD, and the dispenser doesn't get that cold.

So I buy a case of water and refill the bottles for about a week before dumping them.

I can't stand tap water.

I wonder how many bottled waters are just tap water ran through a filter?

We have a local spring water company. It's really overpriced because they use rubber cork glass bottles (but the bottles are overpriced). I bought some once, to try it, and for the bottles. I took a drink and said, "Yep, it tastes like Indiana water." It really did taste like tap water, even though I had it in the fridge and it was coming out of a glass bottle. So maybe bottled water just tastes different because it comes from somewhere else.

I do refuse to buy store brand bottled water though. The last couple times I did, I thought it tasted like soap.

How about the oxygen bars, where you actually pay to go in and breath air!

I think DS is on to something!

Just sell empty bottles as "Dehydrated Bottled Water: Just add water and shake for 20 seconds".

We'll be rich!
