Comfort Songs

Hey!
Do you have any "comfort" songs, songs that have comforted you at a certain time in your life?

For me, 2 come to mind from a period in my life:

In 1993, I moved into a house with new unknown roomates who were all friends with eachother for years. I was goin through some personal stuff, and while I really enjoyed (perhaps for the only time) the company of my roomates here, I found comfort in songs when I needed some alone time. Specifially, I remember discovering and loving, from Automatic For The People by R.E.M., the song Man on The Moon. The cd as a whole was brilliant (as most of there stuff is....)
After that, I'd throw on and really enjoyed the entire Our Time In Eden cd by 10,000 maniacs. really remember liking the song Jezebel, but really the whole vibe of that album. And I am not even really a Natile Merchant fan. but that cd is art.

Before that, THE DAY AFTER I broke up with my 1980s big mall-hair girlfriend, the song With Or Without You by U2 was released. 20 yrs later I remember how distraught in my mullet and flight pants I was, but that song spoke VOLUMES to me, who knows, maybe even saved my life. Right song needed to be heard at the right time. soothing I recall. I loved that whole first side of the Joshua Tree that it took 6 months before I turned the album over to hear side 2 even. And then I had another 6 months of loving that side of the album without going back to side 1. Still, is that not one of the most perfect albums ever made!?

YOUR TURN! GO.smile

Good question! There's a few...

When I was very little, my grandfather would sing "You Are My Sunshine" to me whenever I had nightmares...and I had a lot! It would always make me feel better.

When it came to a broken heart, Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved a Man" kept me going.  She had soul, and you could hear her pain and her strength simultaneously dripping from her singing.

In times of feeling weakness or low because of life's events, "Lean On Me" was always uplifting. That song had special meaning for me and my sisters, as well as between me and a couple very close friends.

my favorite pianist, Gene Harris, does a wonderful rendition of You Are my Sunshine. Although he doesn't sing it like your grand-pappy would have, I will play it for ya the next jazz 101 that you are tuned into G-Gal.smile
I am sure your grand-pappy would way approve.smile

My grandma would sing, "You Are My Sunshine" too! And this one song that went, "I love you, a bushel and a peck..."

I also still have my teddy bear, and it still plays music. I've never learned the name of the song, and I don't know if it even has words, but it's got to be something popular enough to put in a teddy bear.

I don't think that I do. I love music so if I am feeling down I just play something that I love. But nothing in particular. And hopefully nothing that reminds me of why I am down.

But if I am missing my Dad or he and my problems resurface in my head then listening to Anita Baker and Bob Seger makes me feel closer to him. I remember him listening to them. He listened to Kenny G too but that gives me nothing. no.gif

Oooo, that's a tough one because I love all kinds of music.  I think my favorite song has to be "Love Rescue Me" by U2 from their Rattle & Hum disc.  I was coming out of a very dark period in my life, getting myself drug free and cleaning up....this song helped me make it through to the other side when I didn't think I was going to.

When I'm under a lot of stress, I love to listen to classical.....mainly Bach's symphonies.  Yeah I know I'm geeky, but I really love classical music.

When I'm missing my mom, I'll break my cardinal rule of "no country music" and listen to a little Johnny Cash or Hank Williams Sr. ......she really loved their music.

on the spot, i can't come up with anything.  when i'm feeling agitated, i like to listen to willie nelson or johnny cash.

lately, i've been needing to hear "always on my mind" ; probably since i'm getting close to going to see my mom but my dad isn't there ...

Great question.

The first that comes to mind is "Out Here On My Own" from FAME. Belting that out has helpmed me so many times in my life. And anything from The Monkees. That's all good comfort music.

I love Garth Brooks "Unanswered Prayers" when things don't go the way I plan. It reminds the that "My way" is not necessarily the "Best Way". Sometimes it's best to "take your hand off the steering wheel" and just ride.

And this year my anthem has been Gloria Gaynor's "I will Survive".
