Kite Pics

The Callaway Nebraska Kite Fly is over for another year.

A good time was had by all.

Rather than post the pics here in the forum, I decided to make a simple page in my site and post them there. If you'd like to see this year's pics, they are here.

I will have some video sometime this week too, but I haven't gotten that all put together yet.

Very cool as always Webdude!

It looks like there were some new kites out there this year!

I'm sure you've told us this before but out of curiosity, how do you take the arial shots with your kite cam? Is the camera just on a timer to constantly be taking photos at regular intervals while it's up there? Or do you have a remote control for taking pictures?

I have the camera mounted in an aluminum frame. There are two little gear motors that are driven by one AA battery. One motor slowly turns the camera 360 degrees while the other activates the shutter every 10 seconds or so. I might take some video of it working, that would explain it all much better than I can.

I got the video put together. It is about 12 mintues long and its a hefty 96 megabyte download. There is a little bit of me flying my kite at the end.

There is a link to the video on the photo page now. smile.gif

JR (and others off the forum) have asked how my kite camera rig works. I made a short video today that should explain it pretty well. If you go back to the kite page, there is a link to the new video there.

Ingenious!

You mentioned you got the pulley system plans off the internet. Do you know of any other guys who take pictures from their kite too?

How's the camera held in? Just kind of wedged in there?

I don't personally know anyone else that does much KAP. It seems like every time I do it at an event, someone comes up to me and tells me that they know someone else who does it.

After I got done making that video, I realized I didn't mention how the camera is held in. There is a nut in the bottom of the camera for mounting on a tripod. I just ran a screw through the bottom part of the frame up into the tripod mount. Unscrew that one screw and the camera just slips right out of the frame.
