Ok, I FINALLY got to the infamous musical episode last night.
My first thought is that I let my expectations build up to much so I was a little disappointed. While I enjoyed the show, I thought most of the actors simply did not have the voices to pull off a musical and the lyrics to most of the songs were forced and clumsy.
With that ONE bit of negativity behind me, I LOVED the music/dance scene between Onya (sic?) and Xander. Every time I see Onya I like her a little more. What a great character. I bet it was a fun one to play too!
I also really appreciated the fact they RECOGNIZED they were bursting into song. I really don't like it when a TV show just does a musical episode and acts as if it's perfectly normal.
Finally, I was VERY impressed with the fact that the episode moved the storylines of all the characters along so well! You assume that a musical episode is going to be a stand-alone episode just for fun, but instead it was perhaps the most effective episode they've had at really pushing everyones storylines further along.
Overall I'd give the episode a B+. It could have gotten an A if they had spent a little more time writing the songs (I won't take points off for the bad singing because I realize they had to work with what they had).
I will admit the first time I watched it, I was like WTH?! But it grew on me. The more I learned about it the more I liked it. Sarah originally was not gonna be the singer but was determined to do it. "Giles" & "Tara" actually do sing besides this. Xander was the only one who made me cringe. Oh and because it wasn't really "Willow's" thing she had very little parts. So maybe was worse than Xander. But yes I loved that scene as well. Oh and I loved the "They got the mustard out" guy singing- lol
