Yay! ... Ouch! ... Yay! ... Ouch!

Provided our loan application is accepted (Ouch!) we will have a new car on Wednesday (Yay!).

Our 1993 Mazda 626 is beginning to worry us a little. Its been a good car, but it is making a few little noises that makes me wonder when we take off for very far from home.

We've been looking at the Buick LaCrosse for a while. We started looking at one and two year old used ones but apparently they are holding their value quite well. We decided we should check out new just to see what the difference is. With the 2008 models coming out the end of this month, they are offering some good rebates on the 2007 models. With the rebates, the difference between new and used price is basically only the value of the miles they've been driven . . . so we're going with a 2007 new one.

We test drove a new one last night and it was NICE. It was most definitely the quietest car I've ever been in. Even our 6 year old son was like "wow, this is quiet, I'll have no trouble at all sleeping back here!" It is a very nice combination between a good ride and tight handling. It feels really good to drive.

The local dealer has two on their lot but we don't like the color of either one. One he has is a "grandpa tan" and the other is an "eggshell white". The color we like is called "Slatestone". It is kind of a steel/blue/gray metallic. Its a really neat looking color.

We told our dealer what color and features we would prefer, and today he found us one . . . in Minnesota (550 miles!). He said he would be happy to go get it for us if that is the one we want. So, he is planning on leaving Tuesday, will stay overnight somewhere, and be back here with it on Wednesday.

It has a couple features we don't "need" but will be nice. Being in Minnesota, it has an engine block heater and heated front seats. There will be a few really cold nights where it will be good to plug it in and I'm sure we'll enjoy the heated seats more than we think we "need" them once we get used to that feature.

We may know yet later today if our loan will be approved (I don't know why it won't, though). Then, we'll let our dealer know and he can call the other dealer and have them hold it for us.

Yay, new car!
Ouch, a car payment!

The car payment will basically replace the daycare payment that we made for 5+ years.

And, this loan will most likely not go to maturity. At the risk of sounding cold, and its not something we are making light of, but reality is that my mother-in-law is 84, has cancer, and is very sick. There is some life insurance that is in my wife's name. When that day comes, we will use some of the life insurance money to pay off the car. Until then, we will happily make the payments as long as we still have her with us, and we will have a new, reliable car to use for the weekly (and some weeks more) trips to go see her the 60 miles away.

Nice car Web!!  Love the color too!

When my mother-in-law died, my husband used his portion of her life insurance policy to pay off both of our vehicles.  I told him he didn't have to do that, we were ok making the monthly payments on them, but he said he wanted out from under the car payments.  I always felt kind of wierd about it.....she and I were never really close and I know she wanted her son to spend the money on himself.......sometimes I wish he would've just paid off his truck loan and let me take care of my car loan.  hmm

Its done. We're back into a car payment.

I took possession of the new car about 11:00 this morning. I wanted to take the time this afternoon and get all the paperwork settled up, but our dealer doesn't have the title from the other dealer yet. So that will have to wait until probably next week.

We had to go see mom-in-law last night but my wife was afraid to take our old car for fear of something happening to it the day before we were to trade it off so we took the van. We are going back tomorrow so we'll get to take the new one tomorrow.

It smells all new in side.

Congrats Web! I am so happy for you all! Is that your driveway? I thought you had a more rural feel to your neighborhood?confused

Careful with that smell though:

A two-year study[3] released in 2001 by the CSIRO in Australia found several health problems associated with these chemicals. CSIRO research scientist, Dr Stephen Brown, reported anecdotal accounts of disorientation, headache, and irritation in some drivers of new cars. He measured pollutant levels in new cars that were sufficient to cause similar effects within minutes in controlled experiments by other researchers. Chemicals found in the cars included the carcinogen benzene, two other possible carcinogens cyclohexanone and styrene, and several other toxic chemicals.

A more recent study in Japan found that the volatile organic chemicals in a new minivan were over 35 times the health limit the day after its delivery. In four months they had fallen under the limit but increased again in the hot summer months, taking three years to permanently remain below the limit. The limits were set by the Japanese health ministry in response to more car owners suffering from sick building syndrome. A Daily Telegraph article[4] on the study described the enjoyment of new car smell as "akin to glue-sniffing".

Thanks everybody. smile.gif

The dealer got back this afternoon from picking up that other vehicle and he had the title with him. So, I was able to go get everything taken care of. The sales tax and road tax on a new car almost hurts more than the thought of the payments. The insurance only went up $200/year. I thought that was not bad for going from a 1993 to a 2007 on the insurance.

Yes, that new car smell is hard to beat.

Yes, Ruby, that is our driveway. The shop/office is outside of city limits and a more "country". Right here in town where our house is, we are just like any other town.

Yes, Sparky, it is a V6 and no, I have not tried out the seat heaters yet. Its a nice day today.

Ghost, I would love to come take you two for a ride, but I think the car was closer to you before we agreed to buy it. It had 520 miles on it when it got here and almost all of them were getting it here.

Its fun finding all the cool little things it has . . . like the speed sensitive volume on the radio/CD player. With that on, as you pick up speed, it gradually turns up the volume on the radio to compensate.

The telescoping steering wheel is neat too. Not only does it tilt, it can be moved straight in/out a few inches.

We get OnStar included for one year then we have to decide if we want to pay the monthly fee after that.

Ok, Sparky . . . we went for about a 50 mile drive tonight. The heated seats rock! Another neat thing is that we have separate on/off controls for the butt and back. That felt really good to turn the back heat on and then use the power lumbar support to push it right into my lower back. That felt pretty A-OK.

Its also weird to just set a temperature and have it automatically adjust the controls to make that temperature happen.

Those of you with newer cars are probably thinking "Yeah, its been that way for years". But moving from a 15 year old car to this one, we're like "Wow! Check this out!" lol

Oh man, those features rock! I'm jealous! When I bought my car, I got one with practically no extras, so those seem fantastic to me! (I don't even have cruise control. I was so mad at myself when I found out I bought a car without cruise control.)
