What is your "guilty pleasure"?

Come on guys, 'fess up.  What's your guilty pleasure?  Mine is "Bring It On", the cheerleading movie.  I could watch it over and over again.  I don't own it.  It's a thrill to catch it on tv and watch it.  It's somehow better.  Don't ask me why, but it is.

Hmmmm,

I guess there's a guilty pleasure in every category.

For music I'd say mine is "THE BAD TOUCH" by the Bloodhound Gang.  I generally prefer pop & rock that's got a fairly clean message, but I REALLY love that song for some reason.  I've listened to three Bloodhound Gang CD's and there's not another song by them that I can stand, but I love "The Bad Touch"

I'll have to think about other stuff.  I'm sure as more people answer it'll jog some thoughts on my end

John Taylor from Duran Duran. Even though I am 34 and have three kids, I would leave my husband behind for him! Just kidding, about leaving my hubby, but even after 20+ years, he is still my big crush!

My movie would have to be Fast Times at Ridgemont High!

As a loyal "Duranie", I am so with you on this.  I still love John Taylor.  I still remember all his personal stats.  Birthday, favorite food, etc.  I loved it when they had him on "That 80s Show".  The show was not that great, but any show that has John Taylor on it scores points in my book.

Lionelle Ritchie!! The man has for 30 yrs created a happy space in my brain with his music. If you just let yourself believe in "Dancing On the Ceiling", it's a place of pure and simple joy. "Penny Lover" is smooth. "Hello" is great for a simple ballad. "Brick House" is one of the most necessary songs in music.

Riggs features Ritchie's new song "Just For You" a lot and I really really dig that song. I request it on the automated request system all the time. Pure and Mighty Pop Music.

Most of my buddies (Riggs excluded) would kick my butt if they knew I liked Lionelle Ritchie. Shhhh!

Hey yea- guilty pleasure drink! I am pretty much sworn off the hard stuff. I like my beer, I like a wine with dinner, but if I am to touch the hard stuff, I love Corvosierre (sic?) cognac. A snifter of that and all is warm and fuzzy!

DOH HEY THIS IS JD NOT RIGGS ON THIS POST. I AM IN THE STUDIO AND WAS READING THE BOARD AND RESPONDED WHILE LOGGED IN AS RIGGS! APOLOGIES TO RIGGS! I THINK HE JUST DRINKS APPLE JUICE....

Le't see my secret pleasure movie would have to be dirty dancing.  I don't know what it is about it, but I can't help watch it when it's on.  As far as music my secret pleasure is Air Supply.  Everyone around me says the stuck etc. But I really like them.  The other one I like is Barry Manilow.  I grew up listening to his stuff because my mom liked him.  I still actually like some of it.  Sad huh......

Hey, don't feel bad Tammers!

Manilow & Air Supply sold millions of albums and yet no one will admit to liking them in public!  I suspect there's an AWFUL lot of closet fans out there!

Tammers, I had Air Supply on cassette.  I listened to it so much that I wore it out.  My poor parents.  Between Duran Duran, Air Supply, Wham!, heavy metal and broadway showtunes, well, let's just say they were glad when they didn't have to listen to my music any more.

Guilty pleasure drink - Hairy navels (no, not fuzzy) 1 shot vodka, 1 shot peach schnapps, o.j.  But my favorite non-guilty pleasure drink is straight tequila.

Ooh, can't handle the red bull.  I LOVE Jaegermeister.  Don't ask me why.  I don't know.  I don't like black licorice.  Remember the Vicks 44D that they used to have when we were kids that tasted like Jaegermeister?  I loved that stuff.  (cough, cough) Mom, I think I'm coming down with a cold. (cough, cough)  I think they quit making that stuff because of kids like me.

My "guilty pleasure" is Christopher Cross - actually I don't view him that way but I think a lot of people would put him in the same group with Barry Manilow, Air Supply, etc. People took a lot of shots at him after he came out of nowhere to sweep the Grammy's with his first album.  He was never able to duplicate the success of the first album but has continued to put out excellent music over the years and is a wonderful songwriter.  Although it was not a hit for him, his "Every Turn of the World" is one of my all-time favorite songs - the upbeat and positive message of that song puts me in a happy mood every time I hear it.

Like a few of you, my guilty pleasure #1 is Barry Manilow.  I have seen him twice in concert, and each time I've been totally blown away by his musicianship, as well as watching the hordes of "Fanilows" in the audience.

My other one is Michael Bolton's "Said I Loved you but I Lied."  I'm pretty confident my friend was embarrassed to buy that for me for a birthday a few years back.

k done the beverage guilty pleasure, song wise...Gotta be Boy Bands....I love tight harmonies, and the musicality of the 1st couple (Backstreet Boys & N'Sync), O-town didn't do it for me, & I would rather get stabbed in the eye then listen to NKOTB, But Nsync & BSB are slick...acapella stuff especially

I knew SomeChicks guilty pleasure would be Manilow

When The Jazz Doctor was in the studio last week he was amazed at how I could guess who was requesting what all day.

When U2's "Bad" is requested I know who it is, when anything from Boz Scaggs is requested I know who it is, and when Manilow was requested I always figured it was the Milwaukee Trio!

Hey SomeChick, what do you think of Clay Aiken?

I watched that guy on Leno last night and it just freaks me out how much he looks, acts, and sounds like a young Manilow.  I mean, the voices aren't really similar in sound, but they are similar in range, power and quality.

I fully expect that in 20 years Aiken will be exactly where Manilow is today.  Not really fully appreciated despite a long career of hit songs.

Sorry Jeremy but here I go with my Idol bashing again.  I am a closet Manilow fan too(just between you and me) I saw Manilow in concert a couple of years ago under the guise of taking my parents for their anniversary present.  His show was one of the best nights of all-around entertainment that I have ever attended. Clay seems to be a nice guy and does have a good voice.  NO WAY though is he or will he ever be in the same class as Manilow, in talent, showmanship, or charisma.  Clay is a product of the American Idol singer factory, pure and simple.  He is stiff as a board when performing ,too closely resembles Alfred E Neumann for me to take him seriously, and unless I am mistaken, has never written a song in his life nor does he play the piano.  Manilow has been an excellent songwriter(although he did not write his most famous song ironically) and musician from the start and that is what got him the recognition he deserves, not a TV show where teenage girls decide who will be the next pop star by a phone call.

Funny enough, at Barry's last concert here in Brew town, the first thing he said was "Hi, I'm Barry, or what Clay Aiken will look like in 30 years."

You know, Clay's got some talent, and his voice is eerily styled like Manilow. I guess Clay would be a guilty pleasure as well, but not nearly to the extent of Barry.  Do I think Clay Aiken will have a career in a few years?  It's hard to say.  I think if he tries his hand at writing, that will be the tell tale sign.

Wow...I didn't realize my requests, even automated, could be tracked.  I suppose no one else requests Hall & Oates, REO Speedwagon, and Barry as much as I do.  Too funny.

MusicCityMan,

That's a good point about Clay not writing or playing an instrument, but I do think he'll evolve in that direction soon enough.  The guy seems to be quite motivated to continually improve.

I think it's a shame that these Idol artists are dealing with the inevitable backlash over how they gained their fame, but I guess it goes with the terroritory.  If you don't have some talent to back it up though you'll be devoured (see Justin Guarini).

If you're honest with yourself, I think you'd have to admit that if Clay Aiken just happened upon the scene in the normal way you'd have more respect for him (or any of the other Idol artists for that matter) and is that really fair?  Ultimately shouldn't these people be judged on their music not their method of rising to stardom?

I was actually 100% against Idol when it debuted, I didn't watch it for the first 10 weeks, a freind begged me to give it a chance about four weeks before the end and I was kicking myself for not watching sooner.

I was so impressed with the fact that they were grooming ARTISTS, not just Britney Spears knockoffs that need constant voice processors to put out a single.

But I think the coolest part of it was watching a pimply faced teenage like Kelly Clarkson grow from week to week into an honest to goodness diva.  It's almost as if you watched your little sister grow up and become famous.  It was a nice insight to how a star is made, and a good reminder that they're no different from the average joe, they just had some talent and a lot of lucky breaks.

It also helps that Idol has produced five or six stars so far and not a single ego!  I think that in itself is amazing.

Alright, my soapbox is away for the day.  This should have been a shoutbox posting

I actually enjoy watching American Idol for entertainment and watch it each year(so I am not a total Idol hater) but I still see it as a popularity contest not a talent contest.  Although some of her music annoys me, I do feel Kelly Clarkson's talent and stage presence can stand on its own without the Idol machine behind it.  I am impressed by Kimberly Locke as well.  Clay - I just don't see it.  I don't care if Clive Davis, Tommy Mottola or any other big name in the music industry discovered him and signed him rather than Idol, it would still baffle me what all the hype is about.   Hope the Clayniacs don't hunt me down for dissing their guy!

Going with the whole Idol thing...I seem to remember another Factory on TV that came out well before Idol...a little show called Star Search....Lots of Very Famous people had their first shot at stardom on this talent factory...many many more didn't...Idol is just an updated Star Search, Yet I don't hear people whop got thier fame via the Star Search way getting bashed like the Idol Folks do...

Going even farther back...what about ed Sullivan....True it wasn't a competition as we know it...but in order to make it in the biz you practically had to go on the show, & I'm sure there were plenty of good groups that tried out for Sullivan that didn't make it

to become famous,  a star, you need to get your shot & succeed...Idol kids just have a different type of shot than other stars. Kelly tried out amongst thousands of others and got her shot...made the most of it, and showed people what she could do. Clay didn't win, but he showed what kind of pipes he had and producers wanted him...the only difference for him was that he auditioned in front of millions, while those that do it the traditional way only have to audition in front of a few select producers...The Idol Kids have it tougher I think because of that fact

don't knock em just cuz they are idol kids...they had the guts to take a shot , they had the pipes to get them through the show, & they had the personalities that are marketable for stardom...

You know Mo, that's a great point I hadn't considered about them auditioning in front of thousands.

You're absolutely right, instead of 3 or 4 people deciding if someone gets a shot, these kids are thrown in front of the public immediately, literally giving a concert of sorts before they even have a single.

Also, the Star Search point is good too.  LeAnn Rimes started there and she's one of my favorite artists.

I think that never had the exposure because if I remember correctly it wasn't on a major network and it aired on Saturdays didn't it?  I think from day one it was part of King World Syndication or something like that and as a result aired on the local stations that weren't affiliated with a network.

I'm really looking forward to Idol this year.  I bought a big screen TV just for that! (well, and for football of course).  Hopefully there will be enough fans in the forum that we can discuss it each week.

Justin Timberlake was also on star search.  So was the girl who played Ashley on Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

I don't watch Idol much.  I watch the beginning part of the season just to see the people that try out and gauge their talent against mine and laugh and laugh.

I would LOVE to go on Idol, but (sigh) sadly they do not take perpetual 29 year olds like me.  I don't like the whole age cutoff deal.  I think it sends a really bad message.  I have a better voice now than I did when I was 18.  I'm comfortable with my voice now, I wasn't when I was in high school.  I think if you have the voice, you should be able to try out.  Where is the ACLU when you need them?  Yeah, right.

Geez, maybe in this area of my life I don't need to be embarrased by my love of Barry Manilow.  Seems as though there are others out there to.

You should never feel embarrassed about listening to Barry Manilow.  He's a legend! You should be proud knowing that you appreciate great artistry.

Ok..maybe I like Barry a little too much.
