Another salad recall

Just want everyone to be safe!

SAN FRANCISCO - A package of Dole salad mix that tested positive for E. coli has triggered a recall in at least nine states, prompting new produce fears almost exactly a year after a nationwide spinach scare.

The tainted bag of Doles Hearts Delight salad mix was sold at a store in Canada, officials said. Neither Canadian health officials nor Dole Food Co. have received reports of anyone getting sick from the product.

The voluntary recall, issued Monday, affects all packages of Hearts Delight sold in the United States and Canada with a best if used by date of September 19, 2007, and a production code of A24924A or A24924B, the company said.

Last year, an E. coli outbreak traced to bagged baby spinach sold under the Dole brand was blamed for the deaths of three people and for sickening hundreds more across the U.S. Authorities ultimately identified a central California cattle ranch next to spinach fields belonging to one of Doles suppliers as being the source of the bacteria.

The latest recall affects packages sold in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime Provinces in Canada and in Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee starting around Sept. 8, said Marty Ordman, a Dole spokesman.

Eighty-eight cases or 528 bags were distributed in Canada, and 755 cases containing 4,530 bags were distributed in the U.S., he said. FDA spokesman Michael Herndon said the agency was talking with Westlake Village, Calif.-based Dole about the situation.

that bums me out. I love the convenience of bagged salads, and do rinse them on my own (never believe in ready to eat), but this is happening too often to feel safe about them.hmm

I saw a news story this weekend that stated since the last recall, no changes have been made and no increased supervising. Now this! They said it was just a matter of time!hmm

I heard on NPR (in the car...) the FDA has the right to examine 80% of the food (maybe just imported..) but only the resources to examine 1%....hmm

Yeah, I always buy these salads but NEVER wash them.

It's getting so you just don't feel you can completely trust anything.

Even if it makes it to the store safely you have to worry about it. I've seen SO many things in the frozen food section of the store that are stacked above the freezer line. They're soggy and dripping, and you just KNOW that they wind up back beneath the freezer line at some point, refrozen.

It's amazing we don't have more problems in this country with sickness being caused by food.

What? You can't till up a little section of your own back yard and plant a little garden?

That is just wrong.

I agree stupid neighborhood trying to keep the property value up. I guess they are fearful that people will not not take of the garden and their yard will be shabby.
