Do onions make you cry?

I'm just curious if cutting/chopping onions makes everyone cry?

Until about five years ago they had that effect on me, so much so that I used to cut them under water to avoid it.

But I've noticed the last four or five years that they NEVER affect me at all.  It seems odd to me that suddenly that happened.

Anyone else experience this?

(I know this is kind of a goofy thread, but I'm really curious)

I do the water thing- they make me cry.

Onions really have never made me cry. I'm not sure why.

really? you are immune to that?

when I used to chop onions at the burger place I worked at in high school, we were told to breathe through our mouths. It helped a bit.

I don't like onions so therfore do not chop them.

They bother my husband though.

Hm, since it's because of a gas that the onion releases that makes you cry, I wonder if having glasses or contacts makes a difference?

I am JD.  It's SO strange.

Like I said, it used to bother me horribly.

Changes like that make me nervous.

When I got really sick about 3 years ago my vision which is normally horrible suddenly improved immensely.  Wearing glasses or contacts made my vision blurry!  I actually was walking around with great vision without any contacts for a week.  I thought it was a miracle.

Then I went to the doctor and they told me my blood pressure had skyrocketed to 190 or so and that was causing the improved vision (but was obviously very dangerous).

Now when I notice a change I wonder what's going on internally that causes it!

I'm sure this is no big deal, but it really did strike me as odd.  I can put an onion directly under my face and dice it and I don't get a single tear.  I don't even notice it.

NO WAY JOSE!

WebMD scares the bejesus outta me!

I have the sniffles and it tells me I could have a rare African nose disease and only have three days to live unless I injest grounded eye of newt asap.

The only onions that make my eyes tear up are white onions.  Any of the rest don't bother me, but wow, those white ones do it every time!
