yea...it will be a bit of an adjustment....it hit me last night that "wow, 4 yrs of sunday nights, THIS is what I did. While i look forward to still using that time contructively and creatively, it is kind of depressing, but I am sure this is  hardest of all on Riggs. This is his baby.

I'm trying to see the positives in it JD, but yes, it's hard.

So much of my time and money went into it though.  I know most people probably look at the station and think that I didn't DJ much so how much work could it be.  But the reality is it was a lot of work and even more money.

I'm saddened but yet a little relieved to get back to focusing on things that can actually create income again.

This is why I am so desperately trying to avoid a second job. I really should get one again but it was so draining and it was such a relief when I quit. I can't even imagine being completely free from THE MAN.

One thing I understand JR, is that looming "what if".

Its different for me because this stress IS my job and I get paid for it, but I can never truly relax. I can never fully be "off work". I have to be on call 24/7/365 to fix server issues asap. I can't say "well, its Friday night . . . I'll see about getting the email working again on Monday".

I'm sure you had a little of that with the station too. When you know something is not working right, and that people are expecting it to be there, it is always looming over your head. Is the request system working? Did I remember to turn the six pack on/off? Is an AOL user filling up the request queue? And, to top it off, it is costing you money, not paying you money.

My point is that from the outside, running the station might seem like a "turn it on and let it run" kind of thing, I understand its not. While trying to build a new business and future for yourself and future family, I can understand why you wouldn't want the extra stress of worrying about weather or not the music is playing.

I will still miss it too, but I understand.

One thing to keep in mind is that the grass always looks greener on the other side.

I'm not saying working for yourself doesn't have its perks, but its not all roses either.

For example . . .

When I worked in Lincoln in the cabinet shop, I was good friends with the shop foreman. About a year after I left to move back here, he met a guy that was also a cabinet maker. They were both tired of working for "the man" and started talking about becoming partners and opening their own shop . . . which they did.

In trying to make the shop work out, he ended up working many more hours and taking home less money than at the job he left (it was the same for me). After a while, his partner started getting burned out on this and he decided that as a "business owner" he could pretty much take off as much time as he desired. Things just got worse and worse until he was completely miserable. Finally after about 12 years of struggling with it, he got the job at the state capital and he told his partner he was done.

I was amazed at how much better he looked when we were there last weekend. He was actually smiling again. I hadn't seen him look that relaxed in a LONG time.

Does he miss some of the perks of self employment? Yes. Is he enjoying being able to walk out the door and not have to worry about what isn't getting done if he's not working? Yes.

I'm in the same situation now. I enjoy the advantages that I have being self employed. I also get weary with the stress that comes with being self employed. My wife and I have talked about this many times. I could probably find an 8-5 job here that would pay me more take home than what I'm making in my business. But, the other side is that I can end my day at the office at 4:00 and go be at home with our son after school. I can then work from home while he's enjoying a snack and watching a cartoon rather than having to go to daycare for another hour. Those things are important too.

I will say that I honestly believe that for most people who become self employed, making more money on their own is more the exception than the rule . . . at least with most people I know (myself included).

We know of an ancient radiation
That haunts dismembered constellations,
A faintly glimmering radio station.
While frank sinatra sings stormy weather,
The flies and spiders get along together,
Cobwebs fall on an old skipping record.

Beyond the suns that guard this roof,
Beyond your flowers of flaming truths,
Beyond your latest ad campaigns,
An old man sits collecting stamps
In a room all filled with chinese lamps.
He saves what others throw away.
He says that hell be rich some day.

We know of an ancient radiation
That haunts dismembered constellations,
A faintly glimmering radio station.

I'm sure it's hard for both of you, JR and JD.  The station was JR's baby.....a hobby, but much more than a hobby....it was a dream that came to be reality.  While I'm not sure of the early dynamics, I'm assuming JD came on board to help out a friend and also to realize his dreams of being a dj.   You each lived your dream, and truthfully, there aren't a lot of people that get a chance to do that.  I think both of you should be very proud of what you've accomplished!!

JR, there's a poem I have in my blog that you might want to read.  It's titled "The Road Less Traveled"........it speaks of crossroads and decisions, choosing between a known path or taking a risk on the unknown.  It's helped me get through some difficult choices I've had to make and it re-affirms what I strongly believe in.....there is only one person that knows what's best for each of us, and that person is our self.  smile

Thanks to all for your well-wishes.

Web, thank you for putting it so well. You hit the nail on the head.

Today has already been immensely productive. As I've been tearing down the studio it's becoming more and more obvious to me how overboard I had gone. The money spent, yeesh. I was telling JD, when/if we return, it will be a mixing board and two mics.

But the good news is I'm already selling some stuff on Craigs list and raising some extra cash! I got something actually picked up by a buyer less than 20 minutes after I posted it!

Gotta love Craigs list.
