The Baby Story

This guy at work just sent us an email his wife wrote on the birth of their son last week!

Thank you all for your support and well wishes.  I know details were sparse about the birth of my son Owen except for the fact that he was born in the elevator.  Ang wrote up a description of the exact details of what happened and her words seem to do it more justice then mine.

On Friday morning around 3:30am I woke up with contractions about 4 min apart.  We went to the hospital and were there until around 11 and got sent home.  They gave me something to stop the contractions, but it really only spaced them out.  Friday night around 5:30 I was having contractions again- 3 min apart this time.  We went in and the same thing- we were sent home around 11:30pm except this time I was still having super hard contractions every 10 min by the time we left, in major pain, throwing up, etc.  They gave me a sleeping pill to take when I got home.

Sat. I was having contractions on and off all day.  Around 10:30 they got to 4 min apart again.  I called my mom to come to the house since I thought we would have to go in again that night.  Around 11:15pm I called the nurses and told them everything that was going on and asked how long I should wait seeing as I didnt want to get sent home again.  They told me to wait 45 min and then call the dr if they were still 4 min apart.  Some were 3 min, some were 6 min, some were 4 min, so I waited longer than 45 min.  At 12:15 my water broke- huge gush and James and I left to the hospital.  By the time we got to the expressway, I didnt know if we would make it to the hospital or not.  I knew he was coming fast.  We got to the exit of the hospital on National Ave and I could feel him coming.  Poor James was telling me not to push and I kept telling him I wasnt, but the baby was coming.  James ran all the red lights to get to the hospital.

We got there and he jumped out and ran in and yelled my wife is having the baby in the car.  He grabbed a wheelchair and when I stepped out of the minivan, the head came out.  There were like 5 nurses that ran out and pushed James out of the way.  I kept telling them the head was out and I was of coarse screaming in pain too.  So they rushed me to the elevator and then one of the nurses finally heard me.  She said we have to get these pants off, the head is out.  So, after ripping my pants off, out he came- right on the elevator.  We got to the second floor and then they finally got some blankets and clamps and cut the cord.  He went right to the NICU and then they took me to a labor and delivery room.

Owen was in the NICU for 3 days and we came home Wednesday.  He was 5lbs 9oz and 18 ½ long.  He is doing good and I am doing fine.  I felt like I could go home right away, but then again I was in pain for 2 days so it was a relief.  I dont know who was more scared on the way to the hospital, me or James.  So many factors went into it that we were so lucky to make it to the hospital that he was born there at all.  It still hasnt really hit me that he was born that way.  Haha.  He is known as the elevator baby now at West Allis Memorial.  First baby born in the elevator there.
