Halloween Memories

Growing up in a small town we used to hit the whole town and come home with two sacks full of candy. We also used to go to the retirement home at the hospital. Sometimes it would creep me out because they would grab your hand or arm and pet you like a dog with cold clamy hands while staring at you. Another time one of the guys drooled into my bag but we went every year because we knew it made them happy. smile.gif

Some of my best Halloween memories were at spook trails with my friends. We would go to two or three in one night. Then we would go back to someone's house and watch scary movies all night!smile

The Halloween that I had the most fun on was when I was in high school. I was with two good friends and we decided to play Robin Hood . . . take from the rich and give to the poor . . . with pumpkins.

My friend had an old Impala car. Over the course of the evening, we just drove around carefully collecting pumpkins. We had the entire back seat FULL of pumpkins. Finally, at the end of the night, we found a poor little house that had no pumpkins and we put the entire load on their front porch.

Did anyone ever go to the mall for Halloween? We did one year, and the only thing I liked about it was that it was warm.

But after we moved, I got to trick or treat in an awesome neighborhood. We'd start out by going to the houses on the river and on the back street, and since no one ever went back there, they'd give the best candy, full sized bars, cans of pop, etc. Then we'd stop by Mr. Hoover's on the corner, where he'd have this huge tray of candy, tell us to take a handful of each, and then say, "hold on a sec," and go in and give us more candy. We'd drop that load off at home, then a couple streets over across from the park was the place to be. There was one house that would put speakers out and play creepy songs and noises, yards were decorated, the people giving out the candy were dressed up, it was so much fun. There was one house that would give out 5 nickels taped to a construction paper pumpkin. On the next street over, a guy would put a speaker in his jack-o-lantern and have a microphone inside, and so the pumpkin would talk to kids when they came to the door.

One year we tried to trick or treat the bar on the main road, just for the heck of it. They wouldn't even come see us. :(

We used to trick or treat the Piggly Wiggly too, they gave full sized bars. My mom and dad have a tree branch that hung over the sidewalk that I used to hang over like a scarecrow and grab people. smile.gif

I am old enough to remember trick or treat when you weren't scared about tampering with the candy and you didn't get a treat if you weren't in costume. It annoys me when kids make no effort at all, not even a little of mom's makeup or clothes, and they come to the door asking for candy. I know some kids are broke, but there's always SOMETHING they can do.

Anyway, we used to get homemade popcorn balls, chocolate suckers, pumpkin muffins and other special treats in addition to all the good candy...wax bottles, redhots, Bit O' Honey, Slowpokes, Hershey Bars, Pop Rocks... hungry.gif

The only thing I envy of kids now is that a lot of communities are allowing night trick or treat...we never had that because parents worried some crazy would kidnap their sweet children from their comfortable suburban neighborhood.

We always went trick-or-treating at night....it was usually dark by 6:00. My mom would take us around the neighborhood, then we'd walk over to my grandparents home to get our treat from them. My grandma used to make homemade donuts every Halloween, and we'd have some of those with apple cider. On our way back home, my mom would tell us spooky stories....she had an active imagination and would scare the crap out of us with her stories, but the endings were always something silly to make us laugh. I think she changed the endings because she didn't want us up all night from nightmares, haha. I miss my mom's stories most of all.

i don't think my parents ever took us kids trick-or-treating.  back in the day, we were able to just go.  nobody ever worried about child predators.  i don't think i ever heard the phrase child predator as a kid.  and the only store bought costume i can remember having was raggedy ann when i was 6 ish.  from about 7 on we used this thing called imagination to make own costumes out of whatever we could come up with and whatever make-up mom didn't mind us trashing!  one year my younger brother and i were bums; another year i dressed him up like a girl and i was a boy;  another year i was a scarecrow and he got a store bought costume -- a pirate.

we were really scared of la llorona (the weeping woman).  folklore has it that she drowned her children in the river and roamed the river banks weeping for what she had done.  that's one version.  the version that my older brother used to scare us with was that she roamed the TOWN with an AXE looking for CHILDREN to CUT OFF THEIR HEADS!

if you've ever heard cats fighting...  that's what la llorona sounds like  weirdface
