Awe, we've always had a heavy dose of country, you just notice it more now because a persons three requests are less likely to be broken up and with fewer people requesting they come around more often.

A few months back I did try to remove some of the older "twangier" country music because it just felt too outta place.  But the Kenny Rogers, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Martina McBride stuff is very mainstream and very often winds up on pop stations these days.

Stay open SG, you might wind up liking some of it.  I used to HATE country music with a passion, but eventually the likes of Shania and Martina won me over.

I always liked Kenny Rogers for some reason hmm.gif

Actually I liked the little run.....I even requested the guy from the Ford Commercial's song (can't remember his name)....I certainly do like the mainstream country stuff that's out there....no offence to the huge Country music fans I hope!smile.gif

Did I get rid of all the Reba?

D'oh! It can be so hard. Reba really walks the line. A lot of her stuff is VERY contemporary, but a lot of her older stuff absolutely drips country-twang.

The thing now is that we're going to put the owners first, so we can be a little different in our views.

My biggest concern before was that someone would tune in, here two country songs in a row and say "This isn't a pop/rock station" and tune out forever.

We still want to stay balanced, but the concern isn't as great over how we come across to others. Except that obviously we'll all benefit if we can continue to add owners. If we grow it large enough we may be able to offer the owners a constant 128k stream.

BUT, again, I don't want to spend all my time thinking about stuff like this because then the station becomes more work than hobby. When a question is important enough I'll just put it to the ownership group in the email.

I still have the ultimate say obviously, BUT 90% of the issues I'm willing to just go with what the majority thinks.

I'm usually anti-country, but I'm pro-Reba. I'm also pro-Johnny Cash and pro-Dixie Chicks. Oh, and that one butterfly kisses song, and that Don't Take the Girl song. And that's about the limit of my country tastes.

I'm in a similar place as you, Mz, but then I'm sure I listen to plenty that other frequent listeners aren't too familiar with. I gained some new appreciation for Johnny Cash after spending some time in Memphis though...talking with one of the musicians that knows him helped me learn more about the man and how his life and his music intertwined.

I grew up on country. As Barbara Mandrell would say I was country when country wasn't cool.

But I try not to request it too much, since Riggsy worries it'll drive the listeners away.

And more importantly, I don't request it together. Same with metal. If I request a country or metal song or a 70's song or whatever, the next request will be pop or modern or something less known. That way there isn't 2 in a row of a 'sensitive' genre. I really try to mix it up so it doesn't get people to tune out because they think "Too much country" or "Too much this" or "Too much that."

I try to do that too LS! I do that in general. Sometimes I look at what's coming and think "ok we need an 80's song here......" smile

See, that's the key from new listeners standpoint.  If they tune in and catch the end of a country song and the start of a hard rock song we may capture their interest.

If they hate certain genres and the first two or three songs they hear are from that one genre then they may never give us a chance.

When I would be in the studio, which wasn't often, I'd break up blocks whenever I could.

When we have a small audience on nights and weekends it doesn't bother me so much.  Heck, I usually put in my six pack of 80's hits or country.
