Making Christmas Presents

With Webguy's project threads as an inspiration, here's how I'm making Christmas presents this year.

First, I'm doing a trial run with just 2 to see if my idea will work. I got some wooden ovals from Hobby Lobby. I drilled holes for the ribbon that will hang them up, sanded them, and wiped them off with a tack cloth:

Next, I sprayed them with primer. Now I'm waiting for them to dry.

After the primer dried, I sprayed the first coat of white.

I love the idea of hand-crafted gifts like this. woo has sent me hand-made cards the last couple of years, and they are among my most favorite gifts that I have ever recieved.smile.gif

Well, my first idea was to use a Masque Pen to mask off the areas I wanted to be white, then spray over it with blue. But, upon testing the pen, it doesn't look like that's going to work. So, I'll have to see if I can find a paint pen that I like.

Darn. If this would've worked, it might have shaved off some time. But the Masque Pen doesn't really work like a pen and won't work well with the stencils.

Back to the project. Since the masque pen didn't work, I went ahead and sprayed them blue.

Then I tried the paint pen with the stencil, and it leaked through. So I transfered the design onto the oval and painted in with the paint pen:

And it's still not coming out how I like it.  The tip isn't fine enough and the paint is too runny.

Time to come up with a plan C.  Decoupage maybe, but I don't know how tacky that will look.  I need to think on it.

Hey Mz, have you considered using thin veneer decals? They come out crisp and don't look too raised from the surface, and you can put a nice finish coat over them to make them blend more. Just an idea...I've tried similar project and they are a PIA when the paint isn't coming out right, so I feel your pain!

When all else fails, break out the Sharpies. This has pretty much become the testing peice:

I have a bunch of different colored Sharpies, so I think this will work.  I'll put varnish over the top, and I think it'll look painted.
