RIP - 80's pop stars who are no longer with us

A bit of a macabre topic I admit but thought I would start a trivia thread of 80's pop stars who have passed on, when they died, and what the cause of death was. Hearing the Big Country song a few minutes ago gave me the idea.

I'll get it started:

Stuart Adamson(lead singer of Big Country) - sadly took his own life in 2001 after going missing for several days.  He was a Nashville resident at the time.

Rob Fisher(of Naked Eyes and Climie-Fisher) - died of cancer in California in 1999.

Falco - died in a car accident in Austria 3 or 4 years ago

EXCELLENT TOPIC!

I did not know about the guy from Naked Eyes.  I'm always VERY saddened by the deaths of these stars.

Two big ones that pop to mind are...

Michael Hutchence - INXS lead singer

Hung himself with his belt.  Very sad.  His father said he seemed ok, but friends said he had a hard time accepting fame, and the things that came with it.

Benjamin Orr - CARS

Ben died from Kidney failure I beleive.  I recall a Rolling Stone reporter saying he was with him on a plane shortly before died and he looked horrible, the whites of his eyes had turned a yellowish color and he was very thin, but wanted to keep playing and working til the end.

WOW JD!

I never knew that!

I just bought SCTV Network 90 - Part II on DVD and Wendy & The Plasmatics are the guest on one episode.  I remembered when I was watching it that she had died, but I always thought it was from cancer or something.

Jermaine Stewart(sang one hit wonder "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off") Died of AIDS in the late 90s - obviously did not take the advice he gave in that song.

Okay - two more and then I will let this thread die(pun intended).

Paul Young(the other Paul Young - not the one of "Everytime You Go Away" fame that Asisson hates).  This Paul Young was co-lead singer of Mike and the Mechanics(sang lead on "All I Need is a Miracle"). He died of a heart attack in England 2 or 3 years ago.  I once heard him interviewed where he said that every time that the other Paul Young went away, he got a gig.

Nicolette Larson("Lotta Love")  - died of a brain hemhorrage in the late 90's.  I came across her website a couple of years ago which still exists as a tribute to her.

Unfortunately have another one to add to this thread.  I found out today that Jim Capaldi died of stomach cancer a couple of weeks ago.  He was one of the original members of Traffic with Steve Winwood but had a couple of 80's solo hits that are included on the Freeze Frame playlist including "That's Love."

Laura Branigan?  She is one of my favorites.  Everytime you hear Solitaire played it was probably me that requested it.  I am shocked.

yea that was just on maybe an hour ago CP and I was reminded "oh yea she died!"

Not that he's an 80's star, but a star nearing his 80's- jazz organist Jimmie Smith died today. I guess he has a cd slated to come out next week too. The guy INVENTED jazz organ. I didn't get it at first, then I loved it. Really a unique take on jazz- to Hammond B-3 it. I am going to feature a bunch of him on Sunday's Jazz 101 as a tribute.

I hadn't heard about Chris Ledoux.  I'm sorry to hear that.

The thing that always shocked me about Wendy from the Plasmatics is that women don't usually shoot themselves.  Statistics show that women will commit suicide usually in a way that keeps the body's appearance in tact.  That was quite a shocker for me and I always wondered if she actually committed suicide or if she was murdered.

MzHartz: Can I tell you that when I found out about Jonathan Brandis, the girls at work and I were just heartbroken the whole day. It was just so sad to hear about him.

I was so heartbroken, and no one else around me "got" it.  So, I called my mom.  She remembers the Jonathan Brandis obsession I had, all the posters from Big Bopper and such, so she understood.

dang- in their own way, MH rocked. Never quite explored them enough to "get it", but anything ever played by them on radio & MTV back in the day was really good!

Ok, so he wasn't a pop star but John DeLorean (entruprenuer) died of a stroke on March 19, 2005.  He created the futuristic DeLorean car (with the doors that raise rather than open outward) that was in the 80s movie, Back to the Future.

I know he wasn't a pop star but Bobby Short died in New York this week.  You probably would remember him for singing the "Charlie" commercials.

More for the list, this is getting depressing.

Joey and that other "Ramone" (sorry, I'm blanking on the other guys name), the lead singer from Frankie Goes To Hollywood - he died of AIDS, the original gutarist from the B52's - cancer, and actor Merrick Butrick (Star Trek II & III, Square Pegs) -AIDS from drug abuse.

SHEESH!  I need to go home, hug my wife and daughters, and shout out "Thank you, Lord!  I'm still here!"

I was reading old threads and thought this was kind of interesting- in a morbid kind of way I guess.

So I'll add:

Marc Moreland
Guitarist and songwriter for Wall of Voodoo. He passed away on March 13, 2002 from liver transplant complications. He was born in 1958.
