The cofident, easy pulse of Southern California folk rock mutated into something far more weighty with Browne's fourth album. His first wife committed suicide while he was writing these songs, and they took a bitter turn. "Say a prayer for the pretender", he sings, "who started out so young and strong only to surrender".
Hmm. Curiosity now has me thinking about doing the "album of the day" thing again. I'm awful curious about this album now that I've found out what happened during the writing of it.
I think this is going to be a really fun way to thoroughly read the book Jenn got me
At any rate, I like Jackson Brownes voice and loved FOR AMERICA, IN THE SHAPE OF A HEART and the title cut off of LIVES IN THE BALANCE. I also liked his duet with Clarence Clemens.
As for his older stuff, only the big hits stand out for me. Obviously TENDER IS THE NIGHT was awesome.
I guess I'd say I like him, but I never really gave this album a full listen.
Sounds like fun to me. I did not know that about his wife. How terrible that must've been for him!

It says that you want as varied a library for your station as you can get.

If ya haveta buy one Jackson Browne album, get his greatest hits disc! It has all the hits, but none of the self indulgent stuff he filled many of his albums with.! My fave J Browne song is one that the Eagles did on their 2nd album....Take It Easy which he co-wrote with Glenn Frey
