#385 - Don Henley - The End Of The Innocence (12/12/07)

1989 - End Of The Innocence

Rolling Stone says...

Returning to the theme of "Desperado" and much of his past work, the former Eagle hitched some of his finest melodies (especially on the gentle title track) to sharply focused lyrical studies of men in troubled transition--from youth to adulthood, from innocence to responsibility.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

From All-Music Guide:

Don Henley took some time before completing his highly anticipated third album, The End of the Innocence.

Although he manages to duplicate much of the magic of his previous album, Henley has backed off of the synthesizers and expanded his musical palette. He uses background vocals to great effect, whether it's the tragic ballad "New York Minute" (with vocal group Take 6) or the angry rocker "I Will Not Go Quietly" (with Axl Rose of Guns N' Roses).

His collaboration with Bruce Hornsby on the opening title track show a mature Henley singing about disillusionment over a beautiful piano riff that gives the song a timeless air of nostalgia. While he still tackles political issues and writes about small-town life in America, Henley also mixes in romantic ballads, including the closer "Heart of the Matter." In this epic song, Henley explores the emotional complexity of relationships and coming to terms with oneself during the aftermath.

Throughout the album, he manages to balance being cynical yet hopeful, and his great melodies allow his poignant lyrics to penetrate. This album is highly recommended for those who like their pop music with a message.

End of The Innocence is a phenomenal song. I had no idea Hornsby was on it- but that is his piano sound, is it not?

I'm a huge fan of this album, HUGE FAN.

The title cut was great, but my favorites are THE HEART OF THE MATTER and THE LAST WORTHLESS EVENING.

I was never crazy about the Eagles growing up, but Don Henley's solo albums were all great (BUILDING THE PERFECT BEAST is one of my favorite albums of all time) and that made me revisit the Eagles. Now I enjoy them much more than ever before.

It's weird, but I specifically remember one moment back in the late 80's or early 90's, getting on the freeway to go to work and having this disc in the car stereo. I can vividly recall thinking how great of an album it was way back then.

I hate that cover. Even without the c----, he looks horrible. His hair was at its best - like in the "End of the Innocence" video (Looked gorgeous in that!) but he had it styled so sloppily and yucky on the cover.

I never even noticed the cigarette.  But it was the late 80's, we weren't in full "smokers are evil" mode yet (no offense to any smokers on the forum).

In general, it is a pretty boring cover.

This was by far one of the (if not THE) best solo Eagles albums. Even the non-hits were great songs....

I don't own the album but I like a lot of those songs. But I have to be in the right mood. Some FM stations played the crap out of some of those songs so I tend to get tired of them fast. I really like "The Heart Of The Matter" too. smile

I think that's what I like most about Henley, I find the non-hits to be VERY enjoyable, that's not often the case.

On Building the perfect beast I LOVED "Month of Sundays" and the way it led into "Sunset Grill".

I've really enjoyed all his work.

I liked his Inside Job album a lot. Taking you home is a great song, Everything is Different Now.

I saw that tour at Summerfest, in the rain. I forget a lot of the details, like some friends wanted to see something else, or got into an argument and left, but I was like, I'm goin to Henley. Got in for free, just about in the last row center out in the rain. it was warm rain and an awesome show. Perfect seat for that show.

I often go to shows with my buddy Mot, who likes to sing along with the songs loudly. It was nice to actually NOT have him there for that show, so I could listen.

lol the beers were 1/2 beer, 1/2 rain water.smile

Ah, finally one I can agree with. I don't own this album, but that's merely coincidence.

I think he kind of looks like Ozzy on the cover...
