When did the 80's Really End??

Of course the correct answer would be Jan 1, 1990...but decades seem to lose their identity a few years before their end, or in some cases a few years after their end.

For example, I feel that the 21rst century really began (unfortunately) on Sept 11, 2001. And many hold-overs, including the comb-over hair style and wide collars seemed to permeate the beggining years of the 1980's as a hold-over from the 1970's.

So, when did you feel that the 1980's were really over?

For me, at least music-wise, it was the 1989 release of Nine Inch Nails' "Pretty Hate Machine" which featured the song "Head Like A Hole". This music marked a new age of dark music on the horizon, and laid the red carpet out for music acts such as Nirvana and Soundgarden whose grunge sound defined the early to mid-1990's. Hair metal was put out of business for good; or at least until the nostalgia tours began...

Good question JD, and one I have pondered many times.

I think they ended somewhere around 87 or 88.  When Milli Vanilli came along, and grunge was starting to bubble under, and more importantly Rap music was starting to show it's ugly head.

Granted, the "rap" music of the late 80's was Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Run D.M.C., LL Cool J, all pretty tepid stuff, but it was like the small crack in the dam that eventually would burst and kill everyone downstream.

I also agree that the 70's held over into the early 80's.  I've always said I think the 80's was short-changed because the 80's sound really didn't start in earnest until about late 82 and ended in early 88.  That's only about five years and change :(

I think on a personal level they ended in 87 for me, when I got my first full time job.  Everything seems different once you're out of school and working.

I don't really know when the 80's ended for me.  I clung to them.  I didn't graduate until '91 and by that time the music I loved was out.  I miss the innocence of that age.  You know, when you could go down to local skating rink by yourself and you would be fine.  I wish my kids could have experienced that freedom.  It was an awesome time.  Playing Pacman at the arcade was a treat because you didn't have a sophisticated system at home to play.  There were so many simple pleasures that just aren't available to kids any more.  Does anyone agree with me on this?

I definately agree!

Every generation always thinks theirs was better than the next, but I truly beleive the 80's were as Don Henley sings it "The End Of The Innocence".

I mean, when I think about what we watched on TV, what we listened to on the radio, what was considered taboo as opposed to today.  Any kid growing up after 1990 has been hit with constant sex, constant swearing, etc.

It always makes me sad to look at a Hot 100 from 1985, when EVERY SINGLE song was suitable for ANYONE to listen too.  Now you look at a Billboard Hot 100 and I would say that there are literally 60 songs that I would not let my child listen to, atleast in it's original unedited version.

You are making me feel old now Trisha! I graduated in '84. I completely agree with you though about how different things are for kids now.  I remember when armed security guards were not necessary at skating rinks on Friday and Saturday nights and certainly were not needed at schools.   I still remember being amazed by the Ping Pong video game where basically the little dot just bounced back and forth across the screen.  I also remember the magnetic football games where the field vibrated to move the tiny little plastic players.  Kids today would be bored out of their minds with simplistic stuff like that.

Musicially, it is a whole different world today too obviously.  Back when I was growing up, KISS was considered outrageous - they are completely tame by today's standards.

Security Guards at school.  Oyy!

Man, the only time we ever saw an officer on school grounds was when officer friendly came and told us what to do if someone offered us candy!

(that was of course in grade school, by high school we all knew not to accept candy from strangers )

Now I drive by my old high school and there are ALWAYS two squads parked right outside the field house doors.

VERY SAD.

The 80s are over?? Someone forgot to tell the DJ!

Seriously though, I think that each generation feels the same. Once you become an adult you see the world through new eyes. Off come the rose colored glasses. I agree with everyone's comments, however, I see my parents say the same about their generation. The end of innocence ends with our teens. We have to live in this world and raise kids in it. Granted I do not feel as safe, the music and movie industries are much racier, and I cringe to think what it will be like when  my kids have kids (can it get worse?!), each generation goes through this. As long as we do not support these industries, they will fade. I personally do not watch reality tv, buy rap cds or even listen to my local radio stations. Eventually the world will catch on and innocence might return.

I don't know, Amy.  I'm afraid that it won't.  I see every day how people are trying to change our world.    Morals are becoming more and more lax as the world strives to be politically correct.  It's a shame.  I hate that there are SITCOMS that I can't watch with my child in the room at 7 p.m.  The cussing is outrageous.  I'm not a prude and I do cuss, but there are just things that you don't do in front of children.  So, my responsibilties as a parent have increased.  I set the locks on the satellite, I only buy games that are rated E, and on and on.  I'm fine with doing that, but I don't think it's going to change anything except my child.  I guess I can live with that.  I'm babbling, I'll stop now.

On a brighter note - The work week is almost over!

Wow, getting into some DEEP and RISKY terriroty here!

I still have hope we can turn it around.  I think the fact that the voters this election specifically cited moral issues as a factor in their vote is VERY encouraging.

We just have to keep the faith and all do our part.  Raise our children in a better way.  Look to the future generations to expect better of themselves.

There!  I edited my message to take out what I thought might be offensive to some.  I don't usually do that kind of thing, but in the interest of harmony and love for freeze-frame, I will do it.

Aww Trish,

I didn't mean for you to do that, I hope you didn't think I was trying to curb the conversation.

I have to be careful what I say, because I'm the voice (or one of the voices) of the station, and don't want to offend our listeners, but you're free to speak your mind in this forum!

The bottom line I think is that we're being force fed a lot of crap by hollywood, the ACLU and other groups.  It's not enough anymore that we accept people for who they are, but now we have to act as if we APPROVE of everyones actions.

There is no shame left in our society.

That's o.k.  I don't mind.  I realize that there is a time and place for everything.  I don't want to sound preachy.  I'm really not that way.  I just speak my mind.  You are right about the ACLU.  The worst thing that I have seen lately is the thing with the Boy Scouts of America.  They have made it to where the Pentagon had to put out a letter that said that no military installations can support a Boy Scout troop.  The problem with that is that Scouts have to have a charter organization.  When you're stationed in Germany, it's kind of hard to find a charter organization.  What are they going to do, have the Germans sponsor them?  I find this completely ludicrous.  What does the ACLU care?  They are only hurting the dependants of our fighting men and women and I think that is low.  Their parent(s) are serving our country and we are splitting hairs over them sponsoring an organization the helps kids.  Yes, the Boys Scouts believe in service to God and country.  How dare they, don't you know we have to keep God out of everything!  I think that is the biggest problem.  Some people don't fear God, they fear mentioning that they believe in him.

Don't even get me started on the media!!!!!!!!!!!!

O.K.  I'm done with the deep discussions for today.  I'm moving on to fluff.
