Bad Business Practices

This is one of my biggest annoyances with companies that you have subscriptions with.

Raising prices, sometimes substantially, without prior notification that they intend to do so.

I get water delivered from Neenah Springs for a water cooler in the house.

What I usually do is buy a case of bottled water, then open two or three bottles but keep refilling them for a week or two.  I really like the Neenah Springs water, but my water has to be ICE cold, so I need to be able to put it in my fridge for  a bit.

Anyway, I was getting four 5 gallon bottles every four weeks and paying $5.95 each, plus a $1 gas surcharge on the entire delivery.

Todays delivery shows that the price is now $7.00 a bottle.  That's a big increase!  I know $1.05 isn't much, but it's a 20% increase and they didn't even bother to tell me it was coming.

I HATE THAT.

Now the price per ounce is just barely better than buying it by the case at the store, although I don't mind having someone else carry it to my house for me smile.gif

It just annoys me they can't warn me the price is going up.  Arrrgh!

I hate that too. Just in time for the new year. its like its across the board, as if a new year is a good excuse to just naturally raise prices. My Life Insurnace policy fee is going up a couple of bucks. I didn't say that I was ok with that. WHere's my option to quit on the form if I don't agree.
Its this nickle and dime stuff across the board that really adds up. It makes a raise more more a cost of living adjustment only. what the hell.furious

I'm having a similar problem with rent. Last year, they raised it $12. This year, they're raising it $11.

So we weighed the costs of moving. We decided we'd have to find at least a 1 1/2 bedroom townhouse, house, or apartment with no one living above or below us at a lesser price or the same price with more amenities to justify moving (plus we'd have to pony up for a deposit, renting a truck, etc.). A search on apartmentguide.com showed that our ideal conditions didn't exist, so we've decided to stay. It still makes me mad that we just have to live with the hike, though.

When the cleaning business was going well I would raise prices when needed. Usually because our expenses had gone up.

But I tried to keep it to a reasonable 3 or 4 percent increase and ALWAYS notified the customer 90 days in advance so they had time to shop around if they weren't happy with the increase.

I agree with JD, it's annoying that January 1 is just the standard time to raise rates, so you get hit all at once from everyone.

But really, I just want a fair notice so I can investigate other options BEFORE I have to start paying the higher rates.

Our homeowner's insurance policy took a huge jump in price last May; and it's part of our escrow account at the bank. The insurance company sent me a notice telling me what the increase was going to be, but the very same day I got the notice, the bank sent the insurance company the premium, which wasn't due for another 30 days.  I was pretty ticked off at the bank for paying the premium the same day they received it, because I had intentions of reducing some of our coverage to help off-set the huge increase in premium.  I did drop some coverage, but it took a while to get the money refunded from the insurance company.  In the meantime we didn't have enough money in escrow to pay our summer property taxes, which left us scrambling to come up with the money.  This year, I plan to call the insurance company in April and find out what our premium is going to be before the bank just automatically sends it out.  hmm
