School CEO says he's suspended for leaving late kids behind

By The Associated Press

SIOUX FALLS -- The chief executive officer of the South Shore School District says he was suspended for refusing to write an apology letter to two students who were left behind after being late for a school trip.

"They wanted me to write an apology to the kids that missed the bus trip, and I refused," said Scott Bartholomew. "I refused because I didn't do anything wrong."

The school board suspended him without pay as of Jan. 9. Bartholomew said he learned of the suspension from a message left on his answering machine.

School board president Stephanie Hansen said the board could not give details.

"It's a personnel matter that was done in executive session, and we cannot speak about that out in the public," she said.

Bartholomew said he resigned his CEO job last July -- effective this June 30 -- over what he called an unhappy relationship with the school board.

You know, I have to beleive that when I was a kid in school if anyone would have been writing a letter of apology in this situation it would have been me, to the teacher and possibly the entire class, for being late.

That is like me waiting in a restaurant for my date to get there....they are 20 minutes late, I leave and then I apologize for putting them out. I don't get it.

and to think this guy lost his job because of this..I think I would get a lawyer if I were him. If these kids get away with being late now...what happens when its a job? I mean come on...this is high school not a party.

Well, I think he should have wrote the apology....

Dear Tardy Students:

I'm sorry that you were late and missed the bus for the field trip. I'm sorry that you missed out on all the fun. I'm sorry, but you will receive a zero for the day -- btw just showing up was an extra 100 points. I'm sorry that you have an attitude of entitlement....

Anyone else care to add their apologies?blankstare.gif

I need more information. For example, how old were these kids? How long did he wait?

When I was in middle school, our bus got kids from out in the country, and we were late many times for many reasons. If my bus were late and that made me miss my field trip, I would want an apology.

When my two girls have had school related trips, it states right on the permission slip "We will not wait for late students to arrive.  If you arrive late, you must go to the office and you will be placed in another classroom until we return."   I agree with this teacher; he doesn't owe the late students any type of an apology.

If the students were arriving to school late because of their school bus running late, I'm sure the teacher would have been informed of the situation via a P.A. announcement from the school's office.  This has happened a few times with trips my girls have been on, and that's the only time any of their teachers have waited for late arrivals.
