I saw this video on Yahoo's features about a proposal to tear down Alcatraz to build a global peace center. It wouldn't be something the city controls because the property is federally owned, but supporters think pushing the proposition will influence feds to consider it. I'm interested to hear your opinions...check out their idea: http://www.globalpeacefoundation.org/AlcatrazConversion.html

I watched the two video links in the article, and I'm a little confused. Do they want to turn it into a dome that shows laser light shows set to music?? Or did I miss something when reading about it?
While I'm all for music venues, I don't know if tearing down Alcatraz and building this in it's place is such a good idea. Alcatraz is famous and is filled with tons of history that tour guides share with the visitors. Sometimes I think they get rid of too many historical things in an effort to modernize or improve a city or place.
I feel similarly, Sandy. It is history, and something from which we can learn. I don't see why demolishing it will make a difference in the peace movement, but maybe I'm missing something.
