John Edwards out of the race

A press conference is happening any minute, Edwards is out of the race.

That leaves only Obama and Clinton for the Dems and could really have an impact on Super Tuesday, depending on where the 15 or so percent of Edwards voters will be likely to go.

This disappoints me. Not that I would have voted for him, but I like that there was more than 2 contenders for the Democratic nomination. It's like since he's losing, he's not going to play the game anymore.

Though I wouldn't be surprised to see him as a running mate.

Rudy is gone too hey for the GOP?

If I were a republican, I'd go with McCain. I read his bio and wow that man is made of steel.

JD, the real question for McCain supporters is who will be his VP choice, since he probably won't make it thru his full term...after all his in his mid 70's already!

Bill Clinton was a saxaphone player and remember he liked it better when someone else was blowing on his instrument. I'm sure Mike would want someone else strumming his neck. I wonder if he's good at slap bass? biggrin.gif

I just hope that people will vote smart and not base their vote on the candidate's sex, race, or looks. This isn't a vote for prom queen, its for the next leader of our country for goodness sake.

That whole "Rock The Vote" thing bothered me. I never once got a sense that they were pushing "Vote for who you believe will do the best job for our country". It always felt the message was more like "It doesn't matter who you vote for, just vote!"

I have to second that Web. I think there are a lot of people who are voting for sex or race this time, or as much as I hate to say it, are voting against a sex or race. I'm hoping that the majority of Americans can look past that and vote with their heads.

That's been my thinking too on the Democratic side.

I fear that a lot of people come out of the woodwork to vote against Obama because they don't want a black President. Same with Hilary for people who don't want a woman President.

In the end, that may save the Republicans from losing the White House. But I think the country is ready for a minority President or a woman President. I just pray (EVERY NIGHT!) that Hilary doesn't win it all.

We're ready for a woman President, but we're not ready for Hilary no.gif

You don't really want to know. It would just start a long debate that no one wants to see on the forum. If you want me to email the answer to you I will though.

A real short version is that I think Hilary is a complete fraud and has already done more harm than good for this country. I find it humorous she's telling us how she's going to bring universal health care to the US when that was her pledge and complete focus in 1992 but never came close to getting it done. Now suddenly she has 35 years experience with this stuff and that makes her the best candidate? 35 years experience at what exactly? Failure? (yeah, I know she's had minor accomplishments along the way, but she never came close to the actual goals set)

I think she's cold, calculating and let an opportunity to stand up for women across this country slip through her fingers during the Lewinsky debacle simply because she was more concerned with her own future political aspirations.

Dang it, I said too much already smile.gif

On the positive side though, I hope she gets the nomination, because I GUARANTEE you, she can not win the general election. McCain is too liberal and Hilary is too divisive.

This is one of the points we can agree on.

There's three reasons I wouldn't vote for Hilary.  The first is her attitude, I think her personal feelings would limit her judgement.  I've also heard from the rumor mill that she treats the people who serve her (like the Secret Service) rudely.

Second, I consider myself a liberal centrist, not a democrat, and I think Hilary is too radical.  I think she votes along party lines too much.

Finally, kind of related to the second one, I don't agree with her on many issues.

They say Obama is the most liberal of the candidates Mz, but I still would prefer him.

I really think the impact he could have on black America could be huge. I like the thought of inner-city kids having a man like him to hold up as a hero as opposed to rappers and such. It may really start to help that community believe that they can accomplish anything they set their mind to.

To this point the black community has been shut out of contention for the White House. Their only candidates have been Sharpton and Jackson. Both of those men are jokes and never were serious contenders. They used the race card as part of their campaign and would have done nothing to bridge the gap between black and white, in fact they probably would have made it wider.

Obama never uses race and I think he really would appeal to all.

I can't vote Democrat because I am 100% against abortion. That is the ONLY thing that keeps me voting Republican no matter what. But the reality is the President has very little impact on that issue, so if Obama wins in November I would actually be somewhat excited about it.

Well, since we're coming out and saying it, as it stands right now, I'm leaning towards Obama. I like his inexperience, I think it will keep him cautious, and he may be able to shake things up a bit without being too radical. I'm also really impressed with the volunteer work he's done, that he'll actually hit the streets to help. And he has charisma, which motivates people.

It may sound silly, and I'm sure at least one person won't believe me, but it took forever for me to realize Obama was black. Not until I saw a rally with a bunch of african-american supporters did I think, "Man, I wonder why there's so many black people there." Duh!

lol. I can see that MZ. If you just hear him you wouldn't know it.

I've always said I think this country needs the balance of Republican and Democrat, it's what makes us great.

Make no mistake, if Republicans ran the country for 50 years without interruption it would be a disaster. I think the same is true for Democrats.

That having been said, it may just be the Democrats time right now. If it is, I hope it's Obama.

I want to comment but I am not going to much because I probably won't write it correctly and do not want people to get the wrong impression of me. So I will simply say that after this many years of only white males being in office- that I can see potential problems if either Obama or Hillary were to win. It of course would be up to the individual to see how it would be handled but there would be a lot of pressure just because of their race or gender. This doesn't mean that they aren't a good choice but you have to wonder what would happen, could they handle it?

I didn't even mean to write that much, oh well hopefully you understand what I mean..

I agree that there needs to be a balance of Democrats and Republicans to keep the country running smoothly. We've had a Republican for the past 8 years, so I do think it's time for a Democrat. Plus, the Republicans are getting a bad wrap right now.

I think I see what you mean.  If a minority president screws up, there's that fear that people will be saying, "Oh, it's because he's black/she's a woman."

Woo, I get your point.

The office of President is under immense scrutiny as it is, with a minority or a woman you have that added scrutiny, as unfair as it may be.

Things go poorly and "see, a woman can't be commander in chief, she can't run a military, etc." With Obama he'd be a prime target for criticism on any decision regarding race, from BOTH sides. Whites can criticize him if they think he's doing things that favor blacks and blacks can REALLY criticize him if they think he's "sold out" and is doing what's best for white America.

I know we don't talk politics on the forum, but I have to say I wish we had a place we did because I like to hear everyone's views on this stuff.

It's a shame that politics in this country have become so heated that people are afraid to discuss them. It's through discussion that we learn and this country would be a lot better off if everyone who voted had thoroughly discussed the candidates and the issues.

I have not read all of this thread- I am too busy. But that statement got me. It would take more than the president to ever change our laws on abortion. And in the end it is a personal decision that that person deals with. It is hard for me to separate religion from politics too. But I would like a leader that shares my religious views, but I also want one that can respect everyone's views. So I hate to think that one issue keeps you from our party. Even a democratic president could not stop the momentum if it ever got to that point. Am I making sense??? I know what I want to say... but not sure I am making my point.

I understand your point Ruby but I fundamentally disagree with you.

I won't even discuss it any further because I know abortion is a topic that people will never see eye to eye on.

I believe life begins at conception and I believe it is wrong to take a life. Case closed.

But I respect your right to your opinioin.

Whatever the issue is aside, I think what Ruby's saying is that, are you choosing a party based on one issue, or are you looking at the entire picture?
