Efficiencies??

Logged in from Sunny FL
We did Miami Beach
We did Islamorada and the dolphins
We did The Everglades
We did St Petersburg and Madeira Island
We did Sarasota
We are doing I-Drive again in Orlando and sleep here tomorrow night too - and then heading off to Disney then NY

Hey guys - what are "Efficiencies" as listed on the Motel signs we keep driving past?

Hope you're all well...I have not had time to read the threads. wink.gifbiggrin.gif

Welcome to the states Pip! The efficiency motels I've stayed in are equipped with some appliances. Refrigerator, stove etc. I'm pretty sure that is what they are talking about.

When I see "efficiency" I think more of a really small apartment. Like Sparky said, more stuff than a standard motel room, but still very small compared to a real apartment.

Its marketing. An "efficient" apartment sounds like a better place to live than a "tiny" apartment.

Keep in mind, too, that efficiencies in motels are rented as a place of residence by many people. It is inexpensive and that person can get discounts for rentals by the week or month. In major tourism destinations, it isn't uncommon that people who follow seasonal work opportunities rent efficiencies to save money and not have to make long term rental commitments.

Efficiencies have all the wonderful appliances of home, like a stove and sink, but just with the added advantage of them being mere inches from your pillow and designed with the midget traveler in mind.biggrin.gif

I hope so; then he can sit out on his front porch and look the neighborhood over real good.  Heck, it's the perfect set-up for socializing with neighbors.  It was built with socialization in mind.  smile

Aww I love being over there...
New York was great - we flew up from Miami on Friday and I was lousy on the flight with a cold so ears were going crazy on landing. We were then stuck in a minibus for an hour with a mad Jamaican with no Air Con - and it was dead hot! I had to sleep for a couple of hrs.

On Friday evening we took the Subway into town and then caught the ferry to Staten Island and grabbed some pizza and came back again after an hour or so...

On Saturday we subwayed back down town and did a quick return to Staten again just to take pics of The Statue in daylight then we just moseyed...saw some filming (but missed Mr Travolta and Denzil Washington) for the Remake of "The Taking of Pelham 123" We did Ground Zero, Wall Street, Canal Street, Greenwich, SoHo, Tribeca, Broadway, Times Square and killed our feet walking...

On Sunday we visited Lower East Side and went to the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and saw a couple of short videos and had a guided tour of a preserved Tenement - very interesting and Highly Recommended!!!! Later we walked to the Empire State Building and did all the tourist stuff! Yeah it looks pretty big from the street but getting up there and looking down really puts the surrounding buildings into perspective.

We successfully avoided the Pope and our own Prime Minister on their flying visits.

On Monday we left our stuff at the Hotel as we didn't fly until 10pm and bussed into town and wandered around Central Park in glorious sunshine! We caught our plane and got back into our house at noon...and back to work today!

Pip - glad you had a great time. If you ever swing through Philadelphia let me know. There is a ton to do in and around the city.

Oh Mz, it was great. The kids adored it (Mark and I just watched)
The kids gushed with pleasure afterwards and were great in the water...

Rachel admited also in the holiday that at the risk of sounding cheesy the Dolphins and Disney were indeed dreams come true - great to here from a teenager!biggrinbiggrinbiggrin
