Shout Box III - The Anger Returns

DO YOU KNOW WHAT I HATE!??!! The broadcast radio ads for cars and credit cards!

How ABSOLUTELY ANNOYING is that little speed-talking disclaimer voice that comes on at what is supposedly the end of the commercial, but for 20 seconds or so just ABSOLUTELY NEGATES what was just advertised, thereby making the ad a lie!! You know who I mean:

Thats what I love about Freeze Frame. We NEVER play annoying ads like this!!!

Oh I hear you on that Somechick, I avoid the freeway for city driving whenever possible! My job (besides being Sunday evening dj here) requires me to travel occasionally from Milwaukee to Waukesha, and I will take Bluemound Ave all the way out there and back instead of I-94. I believe this actually saves me time (and ,well, my life too!) I also have a friend who lives in Jackson, and instead of taking 45, I will take the old 41 (Appleton Avenue) all the way out to 60, and head in from there. This might add 15 minutes to the trip, but its a PLEASANT RIDE! No white knuckles!!

Yeah...I tend to map my way around the city as to avoid bad roads and crazy folks.  In downtown at 5pm, I make a beeline for Lincoln Memorial Drive to avoid everything.

Sure...the lakefront may be a bit "ripe", to put it mildly during the summer, but a great drive.

You know what gets me, is that I have always lived in the Wauwatosa & Washington Heights area. When I was heading to college in the early 90's, I could get to UWM from the West Side in 15 minutes, at 9 am in the morning, using 41 to 94 to 43. BAM BAM BAM THERE.  BAM BAM BAM home at 4:30 no problem. Then I went to work 2nd shift for a couple of years and returned to college life in 1998. Thought I could do the same travel the same way. NO WAY! 5 yrs later and a 15 minute ride took 40 minutes. And its been as bad or worse ever since~! These stop and go lights on the on ramps to have done nothing. I USED TO BE A ROAD KING!!

I may have mentioned this before…But I just can’t stand traffic. Not so much the traffic itself, but Because many times, I can’t think of a logical reason for it to exist. On my way to work today, I was slowed down to a stop on Interstate I-88. There is a 7 mile section w/ 4 exits (one starts the 4 mile section, one at the end of the stretch, & 2 in the middle. Now there are exits all along the 17 miles or so that I drive on the interstate itself every day. But we ALWAYS come to a stop (and creep) in that 7 mile stretch…in all 3 Lanes. Once we pass that section traffic suddenly speeds up to 70MPH…WHY!!!!!!!!! It’s not like I Pass a city at that point, in fact the whole trip I keep heading Towards Chicago. Traffic should just keep building, but now, it’s bad for 7 miles than clears up for the last 10… not many cars take those exits, in fact more get on than get off…and the Left “Fast” lane is ALWAYS the worst.

1.     No exits on the left side

  1. No Trucks allowed in the Left Lane

  2. No Lane Mergers (2 into 1)

WHY IS THE LEFT LANE ALWAYS THE SLOWEST?

WHY DOES TRAFFIC GET BAD, AND THEN SUDDENLY CLEAR UP FOR NO GOOD REASON??

GRRRRRRRR!!!!

If there is an accident, I can understand stopped traffic, and then the sudden speed up, but 95 time out of 100, there is no reason for the backup…and no reason as to why speeds suddenly pick up. I don’t get it??

It’s hard to write down Cuz I don’t feel I’m adequately Drescribing what I mean, but I know you all know what I mean…

JD, I'm with you on the hogging the aisle at the store. Especially a Walmart Super Store. You have people pushing carts that will stop on one side with their cart while still holding the handle they will grab something off the opposite shelf. Then if that's not bad enough they have to read the ingredients for about 10 minutes!

I hear you Sparky. I sometimes am able to get out of work on time (3:30 pm). When I do, I can tolerate the stores and any shopping I have to get done, if I go right away. If I get out at 4:00 forget it, the whole town is a 3 ring shopping circus filled with people like you just described.

Riggs,

I paid $8.41 for 4 beefsteak tomatoes!!! Both me and the clerk, when she rang them up went "HOLY $*&T!!! But the recipie needed them, the other available tomatoes looked sickly, the line behind me was long, so I paid $8.41 for 4 stinkin tomatoes. I used to laugh at my mom for canning vegetables "why, when you can just go to the store????" I get it now.

JD,

I had the same thing at the store, the deli clerk was all apologetic over the cost, she's like "Thats an awful lot to pay for such a small cup of salad, should I put some back".

Of course, all that would have solved is that I would have been paying an awful lot for a smaller sized cup of salad.

I hate the commericals for RX.  some of the side effects that they list makes you wonder why they even buy the air time.  My favorite, although not remembering the drug, was:

"You may experience gas with an oily discharge"  What a great way to say if you take this drug you may sh-- your pants.

Credit card offers that you get in the mail gripe me.  Not only do they fill up my mail box, but I have to cut them up into little pieces because I worry about identity theft.  I don't want the credit cards!  I've mentioned this before, but I have a new spin on it.  I finally got sick of it.  Capital One is the worst one.  My husband and I both get at least one each from them each week.  I decided to try and call them and tell them to knock it off.  I called the number and it said to enter the acceptance number to accept the card.  I didn't want to accept the card.  If I entered it, that meant that I agreed to the terms and would receive the card in the mail.  It would not allow me to hold for an operator and it wouldn't proceed without the number.  Crap.  So I went to the website.  It asked for the acceptance number and where it would normally say OK to enter it, it said I Accept.  Same problem as the phone.  I looked all over the paper I received and it had no alternate number to call to quit receiving these.  They have laws about receiving e-mails.  You have to give them a way to get out of receiving them or it's considered spam.  Why not on these letters that could potentially lead to theft of my identity?  Absurd!  So I tooled around on the site until I found a member number that had an opt out program on it for privacy.  I called the number and refused to enter my member number or social security number and after about 15 minutes it transferred it to a supervisor and the woman said that the credit reporting agencies give them your name!  That's how they get the information.  I told them that I didn't want any more from them and they said that I should call 1-888-5-OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688) to opt out of all credit card offers through the mail.  I called and I am now not allowed to be bothered again for five years!  It took almost two hours, but I would have spent that over the next five years tearing up their stinking offers.  I hope this helps someone else out.

I am calling my congressman and am trying to get legislation passed that would require that they put a number on there to tell you that you can opt out.  If that doesn't get any results, I'm thinking class action lawsuit.  I think this is a real invasion of my privacy and potentially dangerous situation.  I also think that the agencies that collect information about us should not be able to sell the lists to people who want to offer us cards.  They should only be able to give the information out when you try to get a card.  You I may sound whacko, but this is very important to me.  Sorry for the novel, guys, but this really aggravates me and I thought you guys might like to know how to take care of this, too.

I called the number for opting out and they said it will take up to 3 months for me to quit receiving offers.  3 months!  It's aggravating.  Something that is just as annoying is the telephone solicitors that have you on their computer and use a dialing system and then they call you and say "Please hold, all of our agents are busy...".  Like I'm going to.  I have nothing better to do with my time.

I hear ya . . .

What I don't understand is why they will give you credit with a click of a button but it takes 16 answers, three forms of ID, a phone call, a fax, one small child, and 13 cookies to get it closed.

I've got another one for you guys.  Antivirus software.  I have been paying for my antivirus software all these years and found out from my computer guy that you can get it for free!  If you go to www.grisoft.com, you can get free antivirus software for your home computer.  You can't use it in a business and commercial atmosphere (you have to pay for it there), but you can use it for your own home personal computer.  It comes with a firewall!  My computer guy said that he has used it for years without a problem.  My dad's computer had a problem on it and it disabled his Macafee antivirus, but he got the free download from grisoft and he's back up and running.  He pays $39.95 for a program that didn't even catch the virus.  The only thing that stinks is that I just updated my antivirus subscription.  Oh, well.  There's always next year.  The program is called AVG free.  Just thought you guys might like to know.

Way to go Trish!

You're becoming Freeze-Frame's leading consumer advocate.  Perhaps we should be giving you a monthly column in the news section or something!  You're like the new improved version of David Horowitz!

Hey, thanks!  I just think if there is a cheaper way to do something or I know something that can help someone else out, I should share (especially with my freezeframe family).  I'll let you know if I find anything else out.  I did find out (from my computer guy) that Mozilla Firefox will help you avoid some viruses if you use it instead of Internet Explorer.  Just getting ready to switch over to it.  My dad did that and his computer runs 2X as fast now as it did before.  He has dial up, so anything that makes his internet experience faster is appreciated.  Something with Internet Explorer harboring viruses.  I don't know that from first hand, so I will let you know for sure once I do the big switch.

Trish--thanks for the info, especially since I was one of the suckers that paid.  I am also hearing challenges re:  wireless.  I just had my home converted to wireless, and even got the bluetooth gizmos that let me walk around without my cell its just a little earpiece.  Now that I have it, people are telling me I have opened myself up to invaders.  Would love to hear from you Trish or anyone that knows anything about this new tech. and if my neighbor is able to see what I am doing.

Unless you encrypt your system, your neighbors can see what you're doing.  There are a couple of guys where I work that live right next door to each other and they have mentioned before that they can look into the other's computer.  That is the main reason that I have not gone the wireless route.  If someone knows your particular information, they can actually use your wireless.  I know another couple of guys that share internet that way.  One cost, twice the use.  I don't personally know how to encrypt your system or I would let you know, but I do know that if your neighbors have wireless and it's not encrypted, your info can pop up on their screen.

Trish,

I've been using AVG for 2 years now...it does get a bit finniky sometimes, but it is definitely a great program to have...I check my comp every night at 1am...(auto check).

My only finnicky problem comes from downloading the updates...my comp has another firewall in it, & trying to get ANY updates through it is tough, but for some reason, the Grisoft program is kinda hit or miss...sometimes it downloads no problem, other times, I can't get the update to save my life....

Regardless of the problems though...best Virus protection I could have. That program, coupled with Lavasoft's Ad-Aware, & Spyware S&D, My comp is in pretty good shape.

I don't know if you want us to do that Ultimo!

The main reason they don't get viruses is because they're such a small segment of the computing world that the virus writers don't focus on them.

If you get their market share up they'll wind up in the sites of the virus writers and then you'll have the same problems the rest of us do.

You SHOULD be treating your Mac like your own little secret!
