contrasting weather

The snow we received here in the Midwest and reading CP's comments on living in La Quinta, CA (i've been there many times it's beautiful) got me thinking of my favorite places I'd like to live where you get lot's of Weather options in short distances.

I would have to say my favorite place is not too far from CP.  Lake Arrowhead, CA.  For those of you who haven't heard of it, Lake Arrowhead is a little town in the San Bernadino Mountains a little west of Palm Springs(side note: lot's of movie stars have weekend get aways there).  I'll guess it's at about 3,000 feet above sea level.

When it snow there it melts 2 days later, average temp in winter is 40 (just cold enough for that apparrel change).  Sick of winter, you just drive down the hill and your in Palm Srings in 35 minutes (sunny and mid 70's low 80's).  Want a little city life, Los Angeles and San Deigo are a couple hours away, Vegas a little more (tip: skip San Bernadino at ALL COSTS). Last note, Don't be suprised if a black bear is napping in the road during the day, plan for a little extra time.Anyway that's my dream retirement spot, what's your's?

Maybe San Diego? If in retirement I could find some volenteer work at that zoo? That would be neat- Nice weather, a great place like a zoo to hang out...maybe?

First JD you will think I am a wimp, San Diego is too cold for me.  I keep my house at 80 year round.  I am very comfortable at that temp.

Lake Arrowhead is nice, but I sure love the Palm Springs Area.  Driving is 3.5 hours to Vegas, 4 hours to Phx, 2 hours to LA, Disney, Skiing at Big Bear, Lake Cahuilla not far off and of course the over 100 golf courses we have now.  I am now a golf freak.

I went back to Wisconsin a couple of years ago for the 4th of July.  We stayed at my Mom's house in Winneconne.  (Mom retired there)  She looked outside at the clear blue sky, sun shining and asked why I wasn't in the lake.  It was only 72 degrees and I was freezing. Went to the mall to buy sweats.

I loved it as a kid, but my blood is so thin now.  I even play golf in the heat of 120 degrees in the summer.
