One of today's songs

Our music today felt pretty "disconnected" to me. It felt like we just couldn't get together. Listening to the recordings now, It sounds better than I thought it would.

At any rate, here's an amateur's playing and recording of one of today's songs: How Great Is Our God

This is a rather simple and repetitive song, but I always love the harmony part at the end that our singers do.

You do not hear me singing - I don't sing on mic. Doug is playing accoustic guitar, Beth on keyboard, Roger on congas, and I'm playing bass. It was just the four of us today.

I love that about live recording. you might not have felt it at the time, but the final result caught actually how good it was. That disconnect from being in the moment to the recorded result that suprises you with its quality.smile.gif

Oh, so you were the listener today. You were the only one listening live. Did the live stream work and sound ok?

It was a guest speaker today, our pastor is on a retreat. It was a pretty convicting sermon for me . . . something I need to do better at not doing.

It sounded great Web, especially the speaking. I had it on the wireless speakers and it sounded like the speakers were right here in the room.

I don't know who that first speaker was, but he's a bit of a goober ain't he? (hope he's not a close friend smile.gif)

He kept making jokes that no one laughed at.

At one point he said something about the regular pastor being on vacation, and just the way he said it with a laugh and pause almost seemed like he was suggesting the guy was off doing something else.

Like if someone were spending 10 years in jail and you described it as a "vacation".

Yeah, thats Roger (the conga player).

He's normally not that way, I don't know why he tries so hard, but he can be rather corny when he's up in front of people like that. If he'd just be himself, he wouldn't come across that way. He's actually a pretty smart dude, he's an ER doc.

Ah, well. Lots of people turn dorky in front of a crowd. Ever hear me on the air? smile.gif

Hey Web, I listened and I liked. :) You are right...the harmony at the end is really very good. Slow tempo songs are usually very hard to do well because alot of times they are so understated and subtle. Everyone has to be tight otherwise any discordant notes or tempo changes stand out.
It sounded good.

I know when I've recorded in the studio, it can be a little unnerving, because tape is forever. There is that little added pressure. I love the studio but that nervousness is always there not to mess up the take. Do you have that feeling knowing its being recorded? To record live, well Web,
that is something I havent been brave enough to try. That is always neat to capture music in the moment, and your church band does well.

Hey D,

Thanks . . . no, the recording doesn't make me any more nervous because I'm just recording it mainly for myself. I record the entire service then listen to the music again when I get home just to see how it sounded. Once in a while our leader will ask for copies of the songs so he can hear how it sounded too. Usually, I just delete everything before and after the sermon and all of our mistakes are forever gone. I then put the sermon on the site.

I wish our recordings sounded a little technically better (more than just our playing). I'm not sure if the problem is adjacent mic bleeding, bad mix, room acoustics, or just what needs to be done. I just ordered a new drum mic today to hopefully pick up the congas better.

Thanks again, its always good to get a pros opinion. smile.gif

I'd just need to move up there by Canada and start talking funny like JR.
