I can understand their reasoning that they don't want to cause a panic, but jeez, this needs to be announced to the general public ASAP. 

Well, according to this, even if the drinking water is treated with chlorine like most cities treat their drinking water, you can still get pretty sick because it's so resistent to chlorine.  I don't think I'd be drinking any tap water for quite a while. 

Cryptosporidiosis is a diarrheal disease caused by microscopic parasites of the genus Cryptosporidium. Both the disease and the parasite are commonly known as "Crypto."

Many species of Cryptosporidium exist that infect humans and a wide range of animals. The parasite is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive outside the body for long periods of time and makes it very resistant to chlorine disinfection.

While this parasite can be transmitted in several different ways, water is a common method of transmission and Cryptosporidium is one of the most frequent causes of waterborne disease (drinking water and recreational water) among humans in the United States.

Here's what they say about how to deal with Crypto water

What about the elderly? Simply make sure any water you drink is boiled. Clean or soak false teeth in water that has been boiled.

How long should I boil water for? Water should be brought to the boil and boiled for one minute.

Cooking food? Food mixed with water is ok if the food is boiled for 2-3 minutes or baked above 100 degrees celsius.

Washing dishes dishwasher? Dishes can be washed in the dishwasher on the hottest wash and air-dried. Do not stack dishes wet, wait until completely dry.

Washing dishes by hand. Wash the dishes, rinse under the hottest water and let them air-dry completely. Do not dry with a tea towel and do not put away wet.

Washing hands. Make sure hands are washed thoroughly and dried completely on single-use towels or by air-dry.

Can my pet be affected? Yes, household pets water needs to be boiled.

Can I rely on all water filters? No. Water filters that have one micron (absolute and not nominal) or finer should be checked and serviced before using.

Does ice for drinks need to be made from boiled water? Yes.

Can distilled water or water distillers be used safely? Yes.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett shot down all rumors that the city water system was polluted with Cryptosporidium, the parasite that killed some 100 people in 1993, then punctuated the point by taking a long drink from the water fountain from the lobby of the Municipal Building.

"Let me be absolutely clear," Barrett said. "Milwaukee drinking is safe."

The mayor's office called a press conference after rumors circulated on the Internet that the city's drinking water was possibly contaminated.

Carrie Lewis, superintendent of Milwaukee Water Works, said water from the city's two water filtration plants is tested constantly.

"It's coming up absolutely perfect. 100%," Lewis said.

Heh, the main character from Destroy All Humans is named Cryptosporidium.
