Your Dream Job

What is your idea for the ideal dream job and why!?

For me, it is being a radio dj. For years, I had dreamed of being a 3rd shift overnight jazz dj here in Milwaukee at our (what is soon to be ex) local broadcast jazz station- but I had ZERO credentials compared to the djs I listened to who had been broadcasting jazz for 40 yrs or more. In fact, I live a block away from where this station is- I had a dream of simply walking over there at 10 or 11 at night, playing jazz until sunrise, and then walking back home, and that would be my dream job. Pick up a check for spinnin the discs that I love.

The great people at Freeze Frame Radio certainly gave me the opportunity to live this dream- so much so that I don't even view it as "the next best thing" to living the dream. A world-wide audience, great interaction on this board, a great friend in Riggs, no bureacracy, hot pizza and cold Becks on Sunday Nights. The rewards are greater than monetary!

I'm with you J.D.

Thanks to the internet I've been living the three dream jobs I used to daydream about in high school.

1)  I wanted to run a record store (did that online for several years, and really enjoyed it, not as cool as a physical store, but fun just the same).

2)  I wanted to be a DJ, and as you said, we get to do that without the BS.  We also don't have to worry about the high turnover the radio industry has!

3)  I wanted to be a writer.  I've had the opportunity over the years to do some writing, and
if we ever manage to get iTracks off the ground that could be a very real part of my future.

Everything I've wanted I've been able to do, but just in a much smaller scale.

Like you said though, the rewards are greater than monetary.

I am almost living my dream job. Working for a proffesional baseball team is great. The reason I say almost is because during the off season I am stuck doing the third shift security for the ballpark. During the season though I have a blast. I help out with team operatioons and get to meet alot of up and coming players and go to as many games as I want to. I work for the DBL A Affiliate of the Texas Rangers. The Frisco Roughriders in the Texas leauge.

very cool- I know Riggs is a big minor league ball fan. The players are still hungry and are fighting to make a name for themselves.

I agree.  Last year I saw the Beloit Snappers vs. the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Miller Park.  They were fighting for everything they could.

Dream Job:  Well...I think it'd have to be one of 3 things (hey, I have a lot of dreams)

1) Work with a Nascar Racing team, working in the operations or PR of it all.  NASCAR is a huge sport that has this allure that I can't quite explain.

2) Broadway dancer/performer.  Even if it was just for one show in the back as a dancer, it'd be just amazing.

3) The most realistic of these is a writer, mainly doing short stories or screenplays.  I went to college for English, and writing is such an easy and fulfilling thing for me.

NOT that I don't like my job now, but sometimes I just wish I could have multiple jobs and go from one thing to another.

Yeah JD, I go to beloit a few times a year.

Back in the mid 90's I seriously considered season tickets, I'd probably only make 1/4'th of their games, but season tix were only $82 back then!  Now they're a lot more.

My dream was to go to college and major in drama education and then head to NY and try to make it on Broadway for a year.  If I made it, fine.  If not, I could always say that I tried.  Life doesn't always work like that.  I went to college, met a great guy and decided to get married and start a family.  I'm glad that I did and have no regrets.

I also have those romance novels that I wrote collecting dust and would love to have those published.  I won't do the self-publishing thing.  It actually costs a lot and you have no editing help.

I'd also love to do genealogy research full-time if I didn't have my current job.  I work in publications, but it's technical publications, which is a far cry from romance novels.  The steamiest love scene you get here is with a capscrew and lockwasher.    I'm just amazed that I know what a capscrew is now.  In high school I scored a 36 on the mechanical portion of the ASVAB (or ASFAB, however it's spelled).  Maxed out everything else, but mechanics weren't high on my priority list.

Hey Trish, I was a tech writer for a couple of years. Found it drained any sort of creative writing energy out of me once I got home. Working at a pc all day, the last thing I wanted to do was sit at one all night!

I too have worked my way into  my dream job.  I work for a company that supplies products to Wal-Mart.  I travel to Arkansas frequently and meet with the buyers, get to work from home most of the time, and tear apart sales data, writing the orders for Wal-Mart.  Despite all the bad I hear about WalMart, they have been very good to me and my company.  It also allows me the opportunity to pay golf during the day.  I  live one block from a local course and take frustrations out at a quick trip to the driving range.  It helps to live in SOCAL too.

JD,

What kind of tech writing did you do?  We write tech manuals on how to operate everything from communications equipment to heavy machinery.  It's different and exciting (sometimes).  Of course, I do the proofreading portion of a lot of it and know WAY too much about WAY too much boring equipment.

Two years ago we went to Cancun Mexico and stayed at an all inclusive resort. The weather was perfect, the water was warm, the beer and other various drinks were cold. I would do anything from cleaning the pools to being the towel jockey if I could just stay there and soak up the suds and sun.
