Stars that should have hung it up years ago!!

Who do you think should have gone out with a bang years ago, and not try to keep their career alive?? Who is betraying their legendary status, becoming a parady of themseves??

2 artists that come to mind for me are Sting and Rod Stewart.

I was never a big Sting fan after he left The Police; sure Fields of Gold is nice, and Fortress Around Your Heart was good- but to see him now, sitting there with coffee on daytime talk shows like Rosie O'donald disgusts me. My mom was all "Did you ever hear of this nice singer named Sting? He sings such nice songs, he was on Oprah...."  (CRINGE!!!)

And Rod Stewart. Good God man, this whole crooning to the classics with Rod Stewart. BLEAAHHH SHRIEK!! Who is this goofy old man?!?!? Again my mom calls "I like this Rod Stewart he sings such nice songs. All my lady friends at work (60-70 yrs old) think he's a hottie!" SHRIEK!!!!

Don't forget "Nothin' Bout Me" by Sting, that's one of my favorite solo hits of his.

But David Lee Roth is my leading vote getter for singers that didn't hang it up soon enough.

It pains me to see him strutting around with women 30 years his senior, his face all leathery but his hair still down to his a**.

It's just sad, like he can't grow up.

Now though, he's doing that EMT work, and maybe he's finally moved on.

Suprisingly, The Rolling Stones still bring it in the live show!! I saw them in 89, 94, 99 and they were the best shows that I have ever seen. I have the 40 Licks DVD with a bunch of live footage taped within the past year and they still rock!

I agree on the stones!

I still have to buy that DVD Box Set.

They are waaaaaaaaaay to old to be running around, dancing, jumping, etc, but they do it anyway and they pull it off.

They act the same today on stage as they did 25 years ago, like they still love every second of it all.

I don't think I even know that Sting song, Riggs. He's not bad, but its sure no Ghost In The Machine stuff.

You are right on the Stones! I paid $125 for a ticket 10 rows back and 10 rows up from the right of the stage when they played here in '99. (And that was a bargain!! Tix were going for $400 for similar seats in NYC.) It was worth every dime. I sat with a few other people like me- "Yea my friends are up and in back, they think I'm STOOPID for paying this much, I don't care- STONES RULE!" When it was over, we were buried in streamers, balloons and confetti, and we agreed that we would have gladly paid double for the experience of being that close to the worlds greatest band!

One thing I do remember was that in between a couple of songs, main lights off, Jagger walked up to Keith as he was switching guitars behind a speaker and told him "that last one*%in ROCKED KEEF!!" and Keith agreed. Here they are in Milwaukee, on a weeknight, 40 yrs into their career, with all the excitement of kids putting on their first big show. The enthusiasm was real, the show was the awesome!!

Ok..I might get yelled at for this, but KISS should have given up so long ago.  Granted, they're not what I'd call "the ultimate band", even in their prime, but now it's just sad to see.

I'd also have to say Cher, only because she's just irritating, and I don't care how many plastic surgeries a person has: Your twenties are only 10 years, you can't prolong that into your 50's and 60's.

I have to disagree with Cher.  I adored her as a kid and my family loves her still.  In a strange way Cher created a bond with my daughters and me.  As a Cher fan, when Believe came out, my girls liked listening to the same music as dad.  They love the old songs too.  We are going, for the fifth time, to see her in concert at the end of the month.

I do agree about Sting.  Loved his music but saw his concert at MGM Grand a few months ago.  What a poor performance.

Duran Duran should have given it up after Hungry like the Wolf.

Oh boy CP,

You just put yourself in the crosshairs of almost EVERY woman in this forum with that Duran Duran comment!

I for the most part agree about Cher though, I really like some of her later stuff.  I REALLY like HEART OF STONE and JUST LIKE JESSE JAMES.

Oh, CP, I know you didn't.  You can't insult my boys!  O.K., you can because you have a right to your opinion and you have a right to it, but I don't agree with it.  I have loved every one of their albums that have come out.  And I can be fickle, it's not blind faith saying that.  No, they didn't all get critical acclaim, but the Rolling Stones have only had a couple of number one hits and look at them.  (my dad, who is the TRUE music trivia whiz told me that, I couldn't believe it.)  Their new album is awesome and they have as much reason to stay around as Cher.  I didn't like all the cycling of band members, so I'm glad that's over (knock on wood), but I think they are still great and as good, if not better, than some of the bands that are out there.  And as if God is listening and agrees, freezeframe is now playing A View to a Kill (and I didn't request it).

I don't know if he should have hung it up long ago but I think Elton John should be hanging it up soon. I watched a tv special where he was doing Benny and the Jets and correct me if I'm wrong but didn't there used to be some high notes in that song
