Listeners! Tell us how you want the forum to run!

Our community forum has grown in leaps and bounds in under three months, and I was going to discuss with the Jazz Doctor whether or not we should change up the forum, when it hit me, WHY NOT LET THE PEOPLE WHO USE THE FORUM MAKE THE DECISION!?!??!

So here's the question.

Right now, the forum is one big pile of threads, everything just gets placed into one area.  The benefit of this is that it's easy to see EVERYTHING that people are talking about in one shot.

The negative of this is that items can quickly become buried and lost because the conversation is going fast and furious.

We have the option of creating an additional layer to the forum, which could break down the discussions into categories.

For example, when you clicked on the forum you would see let's say THESE categories...

General Discussion
Sports
Television
Movies
80's Music
American Idol  (or other special categories as needed)

Each of these categories would have the standard smiley face if there is something new in them or the frown face if there is nothing new in them.

You could then go into the directy you want and get in on the discussion.

This can help eliminate threads that are of no interest to you (for example, if you do not like sports you'd never need to look at that thread) and therefore could save you some time.

On the flip side, it takes more navigating around if you want to read everything, and that could waste time.

My MAIN concern is that I wouldn't want it to reduce the amount of conversation because it's been splintered.

So, post a note in this thread, and let JD & I know what you think.

PS.  Just for an example, I have temporarily instituted the additional layer, but there's only one category right now (freeze-Frame Radio)

I think it's worth trying. Dosen't sound like a bad idea to me. Maybe add an area dedicated to questions ? Such as : What band plays what song? Why is the sky blue ? If a tree fell down in the woods and nobody was around, would it make any noise? Seriously though I do think it sounds like a good idea. Go for it Riggs !!!!

I was wondering why I kept getting the General Discussion group first?  I would say go for it and lets try it out.  If afterawhile we don't like it or it isn't working we can go back to the way it was.

Hey CP,

Not used to seeing you around this time of night!

Consider your vote counted.

It looks like everyone's game to give it a try, but I'll wait until the day shift has had a chance to weigh in before making any changes.

Thanks for your input everyone!

most of the other forums I've seen are run that way, and it makes sense due to the sheer volume of posters. But I am wondering if categorizing the topics might impeed on the spontanious read and response involved right now. Sure the topics are all over the map, but each topic as presented right now allows for a whole host of opinions to be made on a whole bunch of different topics easily caught by the eye; they are not buried as sub-categories under one generic topic.

I share the same concerns J.D.

However, there IS a chance the change could HELP the boards, in that people can completely avoid a topic they have no interest in.

I'm just not sure, but at any rate, you didn't cast a vote?  Should we make the switch or stay the way we are?

To be honest, I don't care either way, I just want the board to be as useful as possible to our listeners (and I'm sure you feel the same).

Just as a better example of how the boards WOULD work under the new system, I started one other category (American Idol).

Oh I will cast my vote for the change! In the spirit of the rest of the posters thus far- lets go for it! If we can consolodate the 7 pages of topics right now into categories that only take up a page or two, it might be a plus!

It sounds like a great idea to me. It looks like it would make it alot easier to use the forum.

I say go for it.

I agree with the change.  It was quite a change of pace this morning, but I don't think this will hinder conversation.

Great suggestion to change!

Well,

The people have spoken, looks like we'll give the change a whirl.

I'll set up categories for some of the more common area's of conversation in the next few days.

Be warned however, anything important should stay in the general category for right now, because if we change our mind and go back, we can only save one category from deletion.

My experiance with other message boards is that Moderators (yourself & JD, I would assume) can move threads from one topic to another...If we go back, couldn't you just move the posts before deleting the topic?

Mo,

I was thinking the same thing, but unfortunately so far the only tools I seem to have is one which allows me to move categories around.

I'll keep looking through the editing capabilities though, I'm sure you're right, I know I've seen it done on almost every other forum I've ever visited as well.

Wonderful idea.  Even if it's broken into just a few categories, it will help us sort out the ones we'd be interested in getting involved in.  Example would be: General, Music, Sports, Thoughts & Prayers, # of posts countdowns, etc....

(FYI to the newer members: The forum used to be broken down, and then none of the other sections were ever used, so it got merged back into one again.)

I didn't like it in sections, it seemed like a good idea at the time but we just ended up using the one section, this one!

Isn't there a way to have it broken down into the separate sections but also have an option to "view all threads"?

That would be the best of both worlds...you could see the most recently active threads from all topics in one place if you wanted or view the category you were most interested in instead.
