City Hall has been evacuated after a fire started on the roof.

Police Capt. Michael Massa, said the fire was reported at 3:15 p.m. on the northwest corner of the roof, apparently among construction materials. City Hall was evacuated as a precaution, Massa said, and so far, there have been no reports of any injuries.

"It was black smoke," Massa said. "I could see it from my office" on the second floor of the Police Administration building a few blocks away on the west side of the Milwaukee River.

The fire appears to be out, but units from the Milwaukee Fire Department are still on the scene.

No one's been allowed back in the building yet.

Why did they interview the police captain and not the FIRE captain on this one???

That's a good point, Darling. In fact, he didnt even speak later. It was a spokesperson....

UPDATE: Damage at City Hall set at $10,000
Damage in today's City Hall roof fire is estimated at $10,000, a Milwaukee Fire Department spokeswoman says.

The department's Tiffany Wynn said that the cause of the fire, first reported at 3:19 p.m., is still under investigation. The fire was on the northwest corner of the roof.

The building was evacuated for less than an hour. No injuries were reported.

City hall, built in 1895, is undergoing extensive exterior renovation.
