The Good, the Bad, & The Ugly At The Grocery Store Thrad

Tonight I bought 2 cajun spiced chicken breasts from the meat counter. 1.16 lbs for $2.48. Not bad at all. I almost prefer to by in a smaller quantity from the meat counter now, than the assembled packages in the fridge case. I buy only the amount needed. That way there's not too many left overs so that some get wasted either by time or getting tired of eating 3 days worth of the same thing.

Watermelon is still reasonably priced at 99 cents a pound. a 1 lb bag of baby carrots is running $1.99, I used to pay only $1.69. 2 for $5 containers of blueberries, strawberries and rasberries are running at the same price as last year.

pork tenderlion from the butcher's case is running $4.98 a lb. Much better deal than the wrapped hormel ones in the fridge case. They might be a bit bigger than a lb, but still not THAT much bigger that they want $8-10 each for them.

Asparagus is $2.98 a lb. I've seen better prices, and way worse too. This stuff is the thick stalk stuff tho, its in its prime. Not a bad deal.

I'm not a big fan of red delicious apples, but they are way cheaper per pound than the other available varieties, and look twice as healthy.

Black, green, and red grapes each seem to be reasonably priced and look healthy.

Bad-
Beef tenderloin fillets are outrageous right now. they want $12 for two, when last year the same would've been gotten for $8.50. Miserable. I began thinking that flank steak, done up with the right seasonings and marinated long enough would be a mighty fine meal as well. for like $6.

Ugly- the season isn't even here yet, but they are saying that wisconsin's cherry crops were totally destroyed by the floods. I am not a big cherry fan, so I personally don't care, but what cherries do come in are reportedly going to cost an arm and a leg. Lucky for me, I only like marichono cherries, like in a ****tail.smile.gif

Because I was selected as the guy to bring cheese for the cheeseburgers at the company picnic, I went immediately to the grocery store after work. THere, there are some pre-marked packages of cheese that come in at 12 slices for 99 cents a pack. I picked up 5 packs. I was lucky to find that many, as that is such a good deal on individually wrapped slices of cheese, its usually always nearly sold out. but with the wrapper listing the price as 99 cents, they're pretty much commited to selling it for that. The similar name brand cheese was marked at $2.39 a pack.
5 packs at 12 slices a pack= 60 slices. The sign up sheet for the picnic said to plan for roughly 90 people. Meat wise (the company is providing) enough for 65 burgers and 85 brats. I'm guessing that 60 slices of cheese will more than cover anyone and everyone who wants a cheese burger, not just a hamburger. In fact I probably bought too much cheese, but I would rather error on the side of too much than not enough. Besides, yer dam skippy its goin on my expense report...wink.gif

Oh no! I just remembered I bought asparagus last week! It was on sale for $1.99 a pound. But I must have just stuck it in the fridge and figured I'd put it in water later. I hope it's still good...

I haven't been to the grocery store in a couple of weeks. I need to do that. The food in the house (the breakfast and lunch variety) are extremely low. I just hate to see what is happening to prices, especially the fruit and veggies section.
My peppers seem to be growing well, but I am still a month or so away from a steady stream of them. Strawberry season is now, but mine aren't ready since I started them late, but they sure are growing. This is the first time I am trying to grow them. Next year I will have to start the plants in the house and then get the outside in May when the weather allows.

I must be too used to the terribly tabloid paparazzi situation...

Before opening this, I expected to see pictures of celebrities caught grocery shopping with various stages of makeup & hair styles.

I love asparagus. I get gret deals at the local Farmers Market on stalks of it. Does anyone notice the smell of their pee after eating asparagus?

I'll never forget the 1st time I noticed....I was out of town for work staying in a hotel & ordered room service....mainly a side of asparagus.

I thought I was sick or that something was wrong with me. Shortly after that, someone mentioned to me about the chemical reaction in your body when digetsting it. I was glad because I really thought something was wrong with me.

Anyone else?

last week, our local grocery store had boneless, skinless chicken breast for $1.95/lb -- that is very good.

this week the flyer has a 3 lb bag of frozen boneless, skinless chicken breast for $3.99 hmm.gif

i hate grocery shopping and now i hate it even more because i have to re-program myself to shop weekly rather than monthly...

right here cheese. About 13 yrs ago I thought I had to go to the doctor, I couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. smile I think this only happens to 85 percent of people who eat asparagus, I once read. Most have a certain enzyme that causes this reaction, some don't.smile

Jim, you remember Laurie Gliesner at Image? lol she saw me walk out of the bathroom once and said "holy crap are you ok, you look like you're about to faint!" Because she was "cool" I told her "aw I must really have something wrong with me, maybe its diabetes or something...." she laughed and then asked me if I ate asparagus. Yep. LOL I didn't believe her.....biggrin

A friend I work with (who is a vegan) eats asparagus & claims her pee smells like fresh flowers afterwards. Wonder what enzyme she has?

I like asparagus all kinds of ways- steamed w/ cheese, baked w/ balsamic vin, in other foods, etc....its all good!

here. here is the info. I was way off. (well according to wikipedia...)

The effect of eating asparagus on the urine of some people has long been known. Marcel Proust claimed that asparagus "...transforms my chamber-pot into a flask of perfume." Certain constituents of asparagus are metabolized giving urine a distinctive smell due to various sulfur-containing degradation products, including various thiols, thioesters, and ammonia.[16] Derivatives of asparagusic acid are also found in urine. The speed of onset of urine smell has been estimated to occur within 15-30 minutes of ingestion.[17] It has been claimed that most people produce the odorous compounds after eating asparagus, but only about 40% of the population have the autosomal genes required to smell them.[18][19][20]

Count me in. But at least my parents told me what to expect the first time I had asparagus.
