Culture Shock

What are some things you've run into that remind you of a difference in culture than your own?

Today I was reading a blog from South Africa and came across this line: "On Saturday we loaded up the car with teenagers, all with money burning holes in their pockets, and drove to Tulbagh to take part in their Christmas in Winter weekend festival."

when I was riding in a cab from the Memphis on the freeway, so many many old broken down cars at the sides of the road.

When I was in Tulsa (sorry thump and ds) (probably a real bad side of town...) we went into a Dennys for lunch. It was packed solid. And no one was talking. they were just sitting there. It was eerily quiet. Just about every house on that stretch of road had a car parked on the lawn too. Lotsa bail bondsmen places too. I recall never have seen one of those before.

when you to to Michigan Ave in Chicago, even the bums walk around with the self-importance of a big corporate CEO.

When I've been on different Indian reservations and I see the deplorable conditions they live in.  There's a lot of poverty on the reservations.  cry

when i was around 11 or 12, we took a road trip to southern new mexico -- white sands, carlsbad caverns, el paso tx and juarez... we had to leave juarez a bit early because i was crying hystericaly because i'd never experienced children swarming cars with oranges and flowers -- essentially begging for the american dollar... it still makes my stomach turn when it plays out in that distant cobwebbed corner of my mind cry.gif

Detroit was pretty nasty when we went to see the first KISS reunion show in 1996. All boarded up buildings, liquor stores, and bail bondsman places. It was pretty unsettling driving around there.

You just described Saginaw, LS.  In the last 3 or 4 years my city has gone to hell in a hurry; it looks just like downtown Detroit now.....reminds me of a war zone.  I can't wait to move out of here as soon as my youngest daughter graduates from high school....3 more years to go.  hmm
