I've not been on the forum much today. I've been workin'. Yes, JR, I know its hard to believe, but its true.

The new roof here on my shop building is making the other things look really bad now. Plus, I need to fix some things before the damage goes deeper than is somewhat easily repaired.

The first project is replacing the casing and trim boards around the two big overhead garage doors. The paint is all peeled off and the bottoms are rotted from the water running off the roof, hitting the concrete, and splashing up on the walls. I ordered some expensive "wood" from the lumber yard. They are solid vinyl "boards". The darn things were $60 each board and each door needs three of them. But, They will never rot and they will never need painted - yay!

Anyway, here is the first door from early this morning before I started working on it:

Now, this afternoon, it looks like this:

Its the same door, but new vinyl "wood" around it.

Yay! Much better . . . I think is an improvement, anyway. smile.gif

That was just the back door today. I have another one just like this one on the front side to do next. I may come out and work on that tomorrow morning while its cool and at least get the rough part of that one done.

very nice!
web do you hang curtains over the door glass when you're not there so as to prevent prying eyes from looking in? Or go the opposite route and leave a light on to make the shop visible at night?confused

I love improvements like that. People are going to go by and say, "That looks nicer," but not know what's different.

The old wood will go to the dump . . . unless you want me to send it to you. ? . ?

I plan on replacing three walk through doors and two windows before I'm all done so there will be more trash.

LOL . . . yeah, I cleaned up the weeds growing up between the cracks too. That is on the back side and I hardly ever go through that door myself, so I don't worry about keeping it up as much as the front (but the front is bad too)

No, I don't hang curtains over those windows. This area is mainly storage. All my tools and equipment are on the other end of the building. Theres not much to see behind these doors. And with that, I figure if anyone is going to break in, they know what to expect to find inside a woodworking business anyway . . . lots of tools, some projects, and piles of dust.

Its all dark at night, but I do have motion sensor lights on the building so if anyone comes up to it, the lights come on. Also, I have a security system that is all motion sensors inside the building so if anyone breaks in, it calls me at home. So far, in the 13+ years I've owned this building, I've been fortunate that I've never been broken into yet.

I could use the wood for heat in my wood stove this winter, but I think I'd spend more time pulling all the nails than what the amount of heat I'd get out of it would be worth.

As I said, the new roof makes these other things look worse now, but the thing that really made me realize that its looking rough is that the building's tax evaluation actually went down this year. Financially, that is a good thing because that means less taxes, but realistically, if the tax man lowers an evaluation, thats a good sign that it must really be needing help.

More work on the shop today.

This is the front doors before I started working on them:

Friday morning, the 4th, I got the overhead door frame replaced like I had done on the back overhead door.

This morning, I worked on the front walk through door.

I tore out the old, rusted door:

And replaced it with a new one. The new door is in and the building is secure again. Its a little scary tearing into something like that. I worry about getting the old door ripped out and then the new one not fitting or something strange happening to where I'd end up with no door at all. But, it worked out ok.

I still have to paint the jamb on the outside (its only primer) and reinstall the trim on the inside.

Now the front looks like this:

Yay, its looking better. I have ordered another new door to replace that other, rusted walk through one there by the overhead door. I couldn't get one prepainted from the factory in that size so I'll have to paint it when it gets here. I think I'll go get some automotive paint and spray it. That should give it a nice finish that will last a long time.

And, thats where I've been today.

Yeah, those front windows (there are five of them) are on the list to do. I plan on ripping off the old painted wood trim that is looking bad, and replacing it with some more of that white vinyl brick molding. Once that's replaced and all caulked in nice, the windows should be pretty much maintenance free.

aw I'm glad the door installation went smoothly. From time to time in the past, I'd help my uncle do home remodeling and repair work, and always, always replacing wood doors was a problem, especially ones that are exposed to the elements.

Bathroom? Oh, yeah . . . that . . . no, its not done yet. I still have to build the vanity and make the trim. Like any artist, I'm waiting for inspiration. If I don't get it done soon though, I think Mrs Web is going to inspire me out the door.
