Dead Armadillo

I was on the way home for lunch and I saw something dead in the road about 1/4 mile here from the shop. I didn't slow down but as I went by it, I thought "that looked like an armadillo".

In the 41 years I've lived here, I've never seen an armadillo in Nebraska before. I went on home thinking it was probably something else. On the way back, I stopped beside it and took a picture to compare it with what I can find on the web.

Sure enough, it looks like an armadillo.

I searched for armadillo info and found:

In the US, armadillos can be found all over the Southeast. They are scarce in the drier areas of Texas, and are not currently found west of the Rockies. The northernmost places that armadillos have been spotted are Nebraska the southern tip of Indiana, although this are probably isolated cases and not established populations. Due to their inability to withstand extremely cold weather, it is not likely that they will increase their range any further north than Nebraska in the midwest. They could spread farther to the northeast, and would probably do well as far north as Vancouver if intorduced to the west coast. For more information, see the Armadillo Expansion page.
Its just kinda cool to see something you've never seen (here) before.

They've started showing up on the side of the road here in Tennessee too in the past couple of years. They're no better at dodging the cars than our local possum population.

The info I read says that they are normally only seen on the road because they are nocturnal and they typically feed on road kill only to become road kill themselves in the process.

weirdface.gif  It did?  Why in your sick mind did that song pop in?

This whole conversation has brought to my mind the "Rock The Casbah" video, with the little armadillo running around.

I've never seen an armadillo ever up this way, or even while traveling...they are kind of scary looking creatures.
