I have not read this book/play for some time, but just finished it.
We all have our challenges and barriers. I am reminded today that above it all, I need to keep my dignity.
This passage touched me the first time I read it, and it means more to me today. Just wanted to share with the hope that I today may pay it forward.
The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest: It blesseth him that gives and him that takes. Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes The throned monarch better than his crown. His scepter shows the force of temporal power, The attribute to awe and majesty, Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings. But mercy is above this sceptered sway; It is enthroned in the hearts of kings; It is an attribute of God himself; And earthly power doth then show like God's When mercy seasons justice.
Am I uncultured, not recognizing which book/play it's from?

It is from the Shakespeare play, The Merchant of Venice. It is Portia, disguised as doctor of law teaching Shylock a lesson.
I know you have heard "a pound of flesh" That is where this comes from. Portia goes on to tell Shylock that he is entitled to his pound of flesh, as guaranteed in the contract, but in so doing he may not shed or take one drop of blood. An enigma to be sure.
I know the name, and I certainly know the pound of flesh quote, but have never read or seen "Merchant of Venice." Thanks for the lesson.
