D'oh! Wrong House!

Alleged drunken driver knocks on the wrong door

By Journal staff

A Rapid City woman who was allegedly driving while intoxicated in the Sturgis area this morning apparently picked the wrong house to stop at and ask for directions.

Candy Klein, 37, got lost in an area east of Sturgis on S.D. Highway 34 about 4 a.m. Tuesday and stopped at a nearby home to try and figure out where to go, according to Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin.

The house happened to belong to a deputy with the Meade County Sheriffs Office.

Klein asked the deputy for directions, but the deputy, a woman whose name wasnt released, suspected that Klein was intoxicated and wouldnt let her drive, Merwin said.

He said Klein then wrestled with and assaulted the deputy.

Klein was arrested and charged with felony driving under the influence and simple assault on a law enforcement officer, Merwin said. She remains in Meade County Jail.

Door knocking in the middle of the night is always dicey at best. At my house, if its after 11PM and before 8AM and I'm not expecting you, you should probably expect me to answer the door with a surly demeanor and a firearm. If that is not your expectation, you will be unpleasantly surprised.
