Which came first?

As I sit here petting my pet, I wonder . . .

Did the animals in our lives come to be called "pets" because we pet them?

or

Is the action we do called "petting" because its what we do to those animals we already called pets?

Which came first, "pet" the verb, or "pet" the noun?

Hmm?

I think the noun "pet"-the object- must have been around first web, to give the rise to the action verb "petting" a pet. I could be wrong.hmm

either way I need some coffee.smile

That makes sense and JR said the same thing last night in a chat.
