Can U Help Me With A Math Problem?

jeez I am having trouble remembering how to do this. lol I graduated college too....

This distance between A and B is 2.5 miles.

The car gets 36 mpg.

Gas costs $4 a gallon.

How much does it cost in gas to get from A to B?

I come up with .2777777777777777777777 cents

But of course a short trip like that would actually use more gas.

The car would probably only get about 28 or 30 miles to the gallon if it were making short trips like that all the time.

Hmm, sounds like JD is robbing his piggy bank for gas money this week and only has enough in change to get him from point A to B.  I can just hear him now at the gas station......"I'll take 30 cents in gas please."  laughing.gif

Yeah, I know. It seems crazy low right?

But price of gas divided by the MPG gave me .11 per mile for the car, then multiplied by the mileage driven gave me the total.

I redid it three different ways because that price seemed too cheap.

I came up with the same figure.

Lets see:

36 miles is to 400 cents

as

1 mile is to x cents

36/400 = 1/x

Cross multiply: 36x = 400

x = 400/36

x = 11.11111111

So, 1 mile costs 11.11 cents.

2.5 x 11.11 = 27.775 cents

So yes, I got the same answer as JR but I showed my work so I get extra credit. nana.gif

actually one friend was driving another home last night, 2.5 miles. The driven friend insisted on giving a couple of bucks towards gas, which would have been bus fare anyhow, fine, good. But afterwards, it was thought, it can't be more than a few cents to take this person home. So the next time the offer is extended, I want to be able to show driver and drive-e its really not that bad, keep the money.smile

Yeah, but why'd Web have to go an over complicate it with the damn x.

$4.00 divided by the MPG (36) = .11 per mile

.11 per mile times 2.5 miles = .2777777777777 cents.

Why'd Web have to go all algerbraic on us? I hate that dang X, just makes everything seem more complicated than it has to be no.gif

I should get extra credit for keeping it simple.

But....are we going 2.5 miles up hill? How fast are we going? If you are coasting down hill 2.5 miles it might cost you .3 cents. If you are going up hill 2.5 miles and have a lead foot it might cost you $50.00 and a box of twinkies. nod.gif

Hehehe.. I'm with you Riggs. Getting the right result in the least possible steps is what I do for a living. smile.gif We call it efficiency and cost savings.

JR - it is always about the x.

Extra credit to Web for showing the work. Some teachers would make you show the work. That way we would know that JR didn't cheat. Obviously since JR posted first I am lead to believe that he did the work on his own.

Thanks for the math brain teaser today.

if you are like our neighbors it would cost you $60 bucks. Wife says to husband I will have sex with you tonight if you fill my car with gas...he rushed to the gas station and fills it up...he gets home and she gets in an leaves. 2.5 miles to the gas station and he only got screwed by the gas prices.

JR wants to keep all that preservation those Twinkies have in 'em all to himself.  After all, he's 40 now and needs all the help he can get when it comes to preserving himself.  winkbiggrin

Pfft, Twinkies. Another thing that I have never had. Why should I eat those when I can have Tastykakes instead?

I loved algebra in school. I took math all the way through my senior year. I just wish I still remembered 10% of what I used to know.

I agree that the fastest way is the best way, but JD said:

I am having trouble remembering how to do this.
So, I showed how I would do it and why it works that way.

Give a man an answer and you solve one problem. Give a man a formula with x and you help him solve all his problems. nod.gif

Er . . . something like that.

Don't feel too picked on Web, I do a lot of my math that way too. Especially when it comes to resizing pictures.

X marks the spot.

And I still do some things that way. Like when I am in a store and would like to know how much the items on sale is. Math is useful.
