Sparky, glad to see your guitar finally got there.  50 year old Fender...has to be pretty valuable, but the sentimental value is worth alot more.

You mentioned learning to play left handed...
Remember...BOTH hands are doing things they arent familiar with.  I am right handed, but my LEFT hand is the one doing all the fretting.

With that thought in mind, give the mainstream way a chance as far as left hand fretting and right hand picking.  If you would be more comfortable playing "lefty" then there are programs out there.
