If you want a real laugh, send a check with the bills, but don't make it out, sign it or anything. Then you can legitimately say, "The check is in the mail."

You know, I know some companies that would take that as a sign to withdrawal the money from your account using the numbers on the check.

But you could always take it one further.  Enclosed a piece of paper with just a check mark on it.

They wouldn't need to present the check to the bank. They can just say that you authorized an automatic withdrawal, like a check by phone.
