McCain is smarter than I thought!

a female running mate if HRC would have been the one to beat...I bet it would have been a black man. no.gif And I can hear it now...she is going to solve the oil crisis and gas prices will once again be $1.00 a gallon wink.gif I HATE politics....its a game of lying and cheating to get the job.

McCain choosee Alaska governor as running mate

By The Associated Press

In just two short years, Sarah Palin moved from suburban hockey mom and small-town mayor to vice presidential contender.

The 44-year-old Republican, Alaska's first female governor, arrived at the Capitol in 2006 on an ethics reform platform after defeating two former governors in the primary and general elections. On Friday she was ready to leap to the national stage as GOP presidential candidate John McCain's surprise choice for running mate, according to two senior campaign officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement was pending.

She already has a national reputation for bucking her party's establishment and Alaska's powerful oil industry back home.

With ethics the centerpiece of her campaign, Palin defeated incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski, who served 22 years in the U.S. Senate before winning the governor's seat in 2002.

Her task didn't seem any easier in the general election, but she handily beat Tony Knowles, a popular Democrat who already served two terms as governor.

During her first year in office, Palin distanced herself from the powerful old guard of the state Republican Party, even calling on Sen. Ted Stevens to explain to Alaskans why federal authorities were investigating him.

Since then, their relationship has warmed, and they have appeared together at several events. Stevens even said lawmakers should follow Palin's lead in her efforts to get a natural gas pipeline built.

Stevens is scheduled to go on trial Sept. 22 in Washington, D.C., on charges he failed to disclose more than $250,000 in home renovations and gifts from executives at oil services contractor VECO Corp. He won the GOP primary on Tuesday with more than 60 percent of the vote. He's pleaded not guilty.

Palin also asked Alaska's congressional delegation to be more selective in seeking earmarks after what came to be known as the "Bridge to Nowhere" turned into a national embarrassment and a symbol of piggish pork-barrel spending.

She also successfully took on the oil industry, leading to a tax increase on oil company profits that now has the state's treasury swelling.

Typically seen walking the Capitol halls in black or red power suits while reading text messages on Blackberry screens in each hand, Palin made a recent appearance in Vogue, the fashion magazine.

And she oversees a state that's hardly shy about admiring her swept-back hair and celebrated smile. Bumper stickers and blogs have proclaimed Alaska and Palin: "Coldest State, Hottest Governor."

Palin describes herself as a "hockey mom" and an occasional commercial fisherwoman. She lives in Wasilla, a town of 6,500 about 30 miles north of Anchorage, with her husband, Todd, a blue-collar North Slope oil worker who competes in the Iron Dog, a 1,900-mile snowmobile race. He is part Yup'ik Eskimo.

Her previous political experience consisted of terms as Wasilla's mayor and councilwoman and a stint as head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

Palin's troubles with the GOP began when Murkowski named her chairwoman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. There, Palin exposed current Alaska Republican Party Chairman Randy Ruedrich, who was also an AOGCC commissioner, for ethical violations.

In 2005, Palin co-filed an ethics complaint against Murkowski's longtime aide and then attorney general, Gregg Renkes, for having a financial interest in a company that stood to gain from an international trade deal he was helping craft.

The Palins have five children: Track, 19; Bristol 17; Willow 14; Piper, 7, and Trig, who was born in April with Down syndrome.

Track enlisted in the Army in 2007 on the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and has been assigned to Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks.

Palin was born Feb. 11, 1964, in Idaho, but her parents moved to Alaska shortly after her birth to teach. She received a bachelor of science degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Actually, I think he just lost himself the election for sure. As a woman, it's not that I don't appreciate a woman on the ballot, but in my mind it has to be the right woman... and the just the fact that he picked a woman will not win him my vote. Had he actually picked Condoleeza Rice, perhaps... smart and very experienced on the world stage. That is a woman whom I could see as President. Given McCain's age... one does have to consider that his VP might have to step in at some point. I'm not sure a half a term Governor of Alaska makes me feel good about the possibility of something happening to McCain.

I'd much rather have seen him pull off some sort of magic that got Collin Powell on the ticket.. but that was a longshot a best. I probably could get behind Mitt Romney or Tom Ridge on the ticket.

Aside from all that, Obama did good in picking Joe Biden. The man might be a gaff machine, but he is also a champion debater with the world of experience. Unless Palin has some massive debating skills up her sleeve and has been studying hard, Biden will mop the floor with her in a debate.

I agree, politics are all lies at this point.

Last night I watched Obama and was ALMOST swayed by his passion. Then I went online and discovered how many of his claims were flat out lies and/or idealistic claims with no actual way to achieve because flat out, the money just ain't there.

At this point I'm considering just getting started on my life long dream of creating bubble-town. I'll make it a religious movement so the government can't interfere hmm.gif

I agree.  The guy is practically a freakin' liberal himself already.  Now he's given the liberals one more reason to vote for him.

I've got nothing against a woman for President (other than Hilary) or Vice President, but I don't like this choice.  I would have applauded Condoleza Rice as a VP.  And what the heck, we'd be breaking two barriers with one stone!

According to some reports, Sarah Palin is pretty cut throat in the political arena. Those who cross her don't tend to fair very well. Still... I'm not getting a warm fuzzy. She is going to have to kick Biden's back side pretty hard to make me rethink her as a viable possibility.

I would have loved to see a debate between Biden and Rice.

Wow. How are these two a good match? And although I like a person who's not been in Washington so long to be part of the old boys club, that is a heck of a lack of experience. And that says a lot coming from me.

The interesting thing here is, no matter what, history WILL be made in January, when either a black man or a woman take one of the two highest offices on earth.

That's pretty cool.  Both possibilities are long overdue.

That is cool, but I don't think I'm happy about the way it's being done.  I'd rather have a woman that's worked for it than the winner of America's Next Vice President!  I don't doubt that she's worked for it, but I don't think that's why she was picked.

I think this probably goes a little deeper than just the fact she's a woman.

Although I have no doubt that was a major factor in selecting her.  Just from what I've read so far she seems to be an extremely popular politician and I think this might be McCains way of helping to fend off Baracks "Change" agenda.

McCain will ALWAYS be viewed as politics as usual.  This gives him a young, dynamic, fresh veiwpoint on politics and I'll bet he intends to try and make the point that she brings balance to his ticket.

The young go-getter with all the ideas and the veteran politician with who knows how to get things done in Washington.

That's how I'd spin it at this point.

Honestly, I've been pretty undecided for a while. That is a lot coming from me because I will honestly admit that I have some fairly heavy Republican leanings. I'm not particularly conservative on the social issues, but I am for the rest of the gammut. It has been pretty hard to be a Republican lately thanks to Cheney, and as much as I hate to say it...Rumsfeld. (He was always one of my favorite politicians to listen to... way funny was the Axis of Weasles rant.)

I'm going to have to seriously think about all this. I've been waiting to see who McCain was going to pick as a running mate. Right now, I'm shaking my head. My heart is heavy...

"Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know."

Sorry. Had to say it again. BEST QUOTE EVER!!!!

But again, it's about who she IS, not what she DOES.  They didn't look for a strong candidate, they looked for someone to fit their mold.  It's like picking senior class vice president, not VP of the whole country.

Which is unfortunate, because in some respects she sounds like someone I might like.  I'll still give her a chance, but I'm leery.

Oh I know. That's why I said it's about spin.

But look, Barrack is not exactly deep in experience and he's going for President.

Besides that, for all his blathering about McCain voting the Bush line 90% of the time you would be hard pressed to find a time that Barrack himself didn't vote the party ticket. In his four short years in national politics he's been the ultimate liberal.

That's fine if you're a liberal, but it doesn't play well to the center. What DOES play well to the center is his grand speeches, even if his voting record does little to suggest he'll back it up and logic suggests that what he'd like to accomplish simply isn't possible.

Politics is all about spin now, not about substance.

Whoever gets into office spends the next four years fighting the other party, who will do whatever they can to make the new President look bad so that in four years they can regain the white house.

It's a miracle anything gets accomplished anymore.

And for the record MZ, you and I are on EXACTLY the same page, I want ALL of our politicians to stop the spin, stop the name calling, the attack ads, and all the other crap and spend four years working TOGETHER to fix the problems that we have.

Oh, she has a chance to win me over. Believe me, I'm already reading up on her. If I remember correctly, there is only one scheduled VP debate... I'll definitely watch it with interest. I'm just not really optomistic at this particular juncture. I keep saying it, but Condi Rice would have gotten an instant positive out of me.

I'm with you on another point... had the Democrats gone with Hillary, that would be a big ol' HELL TO THE NO!!! I don't trust her at all.

Undecided continues... hmm.gif

I wonder if Condi would have just been too much of a tie to Bush. Everyone wants to distance themselves a million miles from ol' Dubya these days.

It reminds me of when Gore was running for President after 8 years of Clinton. He wanted nothing to do with Clinton in the campaign.

There is a school of thought that suggest she would be too much of a tie to Bush... But there is a really strong case for her and McCain standing together saying "If Bush had listened to us instead of Cheney and Rumsfeld, we'd be in a totally different position now." I would have liked to see him risk that. Condi is running hot right now with the trip to Georgia and the Middle East. She's managed to make some good stuff happen in those places.

If Gore had bothered with a little more personality like he showed last night, I'd have had a different opinion of him back when he was running. I actually enjoyed listening to him last night. I gave him real props for the recycling joke... that was too good!

Condi is a superstar. So was Colin Powell. They never made the most of that guy either. no.gif

I liked Powell, he was a good Republican but TRULY felt war was a last resort. We should have shocked the world and gone with a Powell / Rice ticket!

Yeah, I was hoping Obama was different, but he's still a politician.

Someday, I want to run for president the way it should be done. There's no way in heck anyone would vote for me though, because I doubt I would be popular.

Hey JR, lets run together and go for the first Independent/Republican ticket with two candidates who probably won't agree on much!

I like the quote" It it were done when tis done, then twere well It were done quickly." The next line in the quote does not apply, but truthfully, it's going to be a very frustrating two months. so, wish it twere done quickly, so then we can just deal with the outcome.

I know most won't believe this, but we could both be Independents on the ticket. I have only one Republican value I refuse to budge from and I think everyone knows what that is.

Everything else is up for grabs. The bottom line is if something makes sense, is for the betterment of the country as a whole, and is feasible, let's give it a try.

I think you'd be surprised at how much we actually agreed on MZ. Where we may disagree is on how to go about getting those things done. But if we're willing to be flexible and keep our eyes on the desired final result I bet we'd do just fine.

Actually, I think McCain was quoted to have said "your mamma, Obama!" in that fun and rhyming way that the Republican spin us.

My father is a die hard republican, was in the military, the whole nine yards, I am not sure he'll be thrilled w/ a VP who's only 2 years older than his own daughter 1 year younger than his son. Very little experience, etc.

McCain's problem was he probably couldn't find a seasoned VP w/o skeleton's in his closet. All politicians seem to have some! At least a bone or two.
