I don't know code by the individual characters, I've learned it by sound which is what you have to do if you want to be able to copy faster than about 5 words/minute.
For example,

I don't think "long long short long = Q"
I hear "daaah daaah dit daaah" and recognize that sound is Q. Its really not hard to do, it just takes time and practice.
