Hurricane Ike

Things are looking pretty nasty in Texas aleady, and it's still more than half a day before the worst starts hitting.

They told people along the shoreline that if you live in a single or two story dwelling and stay behind you are facing certain death!

Still, they're reporting this morning that a large number of people are staying behind and going to try and ride this thing out.  It could be a disastrous weekend.

Riding it out near the Houston shoreline is just suicide. They are talking a 20 foot wave... sort of tsunami like.

My question - did they warn the residents of LA when Katrina was coming like this? Or is it they think they have learned from Katrina?

I find it interesting that ocean side property is often some of the most expensive....

I have been hanging out at the house waiting for it... Just got notified that I'm on the Ike emergency team. Disaster recovery is my bailiwick.

They must not have bolded and underlined DEATH for the Katrina people.

I just don't think I have ever seen a warning like that. Then again, thankfully, I have not been in an area where such a warning would be warranted.

See? I take earthquakes any day. No biting nails waiting, long drawn out forecasts. It just hits and then its over.

We had a couple of jolts in the last two weeks but only a 3.5 and 4.1 about 60 miles from me. It was a roller. It's the shakers I dislike

I'm betting the threat of certain death line is a product of Katrina. Honestly, no... the Katrina people were probably not given that stern of a warning. In the long run, it may not have mattered if they had. The lower 9th ward in New Orleans was not the home to wealthy people. The sad fact is that there were probably lots of people who would have gleefully left, but didn't have the means by which to do so, threat of doom or not.

Yeah, I think the federal agencies are simply learning to cover their own butts after the fiasco that was Katrina.

I get the sense the attitude now is more one of "look, we're warning you, we've given you plenty of advance notice, we are NOT RESPONSIBLE if you do not heed our warning"

CYA is the way of most major enterprises, including the federal government. With the election looming so near, I doubt the current administration really wants to look totally incompetent on the same subject twice.

There is always the arrogance factor too. Some people probably stayed around for Katrina and will stay around for Ike because it makes for a cool story later on. Others because they just figure it won't really be that bad.

Ike is 70% larger than a normal hurricane.

It's incredible!

I remember watching the radar during Katrina.  JD was doing his show and we were marveling at the fact the hurrican took up most of the gulf area.  Ike takes up the ENTIRE gulf area!  instead of blue on the map you just see an ocean of orange on the radar!

All of this and yet, people will die and Bush will be blamed.

People have been warned and have made the decision to "ride it out". Now, it will cost us millions of dollars in body recovery (alive and dead), rescue missions, and memorials to the "victims" families.

I understand many people in New Orleans couldn't have left if they wanted to, but I doubt the percentage of people living on the Texas shoreline that don't have the means to get out is low.

It will be very interesting to see what the aftermath of it all is.

FEMA really took it on the chin from Katrina. I've seen a lot of their spokespeople on tv giving warnings the last few days.

They've made changes now where they won't keep people in trailers, they're booking hotel and motel rooms for people to stay in.

I just have this feeling in my gut that this is going to be massively bad. hmm.gif

Also, what the hell is going on with gas! Oil dropped to under 100 a barrel today, down from 148 a month or so ago. Yet gas prices are spiking to over $4.00 based on this hurricane.

We've had hurricanes FOREVER, until a couple years ago they never caused gasoline to skyrocket.

Because this is their opportunity to gouge us again!

Sure they just had RECORD profits for ANY company in US history, but you don't expect them to absorb any of the cost do you?

Yeah, I have the same bad feeling. Was going to just work from home all day, but decided that the more prudent course of action was to show up this afternoon.

I watched the progression of Katrina for a while before it hit. Decided to quit paying attention when I heard it was a Cat 2 and was heading out to sea. The day before it hit was beautiful riding weather, so I was out for a cruise when my boss called. I pulled over and called him back. He told me he needed me on a conference call ASAP about Katrina. I said, "Why? It's a Cat 2 headed out to sea." He said, "Go check the weather channel, girlfriend. Cat 5 aiming straight at New Orleans... guess who is on point for the network? YOU!"

Since then, I pay careful attention so as to not be caught on the shoulder of K-7 with a dumb look on my face.
